Society raising awareness of healthcare providers on blood cancers

AMMAN — The Jordanian Society of Haematology (JSH) held an awareness-raising meeting on blood cancers recently as part of an educational campaign, titled “Let’s Make Blood Cancer Visible”.
The campaign seeks to raise awareness of blood cancers compared to other forms of cancer within the community, particularly among patients, family members and healthcare professionals and providers.
The meeting featured a series of awareness lectures targeting internists and general practitioners from different medical institutions across the Kingdom, including the Royal Medical Services, the Ministry of Health, the Jordanian Society of Internal Medicine and the Jordanian General Practitioner Society, according to a statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times.
The lectures focused on the importance of spreading awareness of blood cancers — which include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma — among healthcare providers, given that a delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis can diminish a patient’s chances of receiving proper care and access to new, innovative treatments, which can lead to serious complications.
“We’re proud to launch this series of informative lectures under the ‘Let’s Make Blood Cancer Visible’ campaign, so as to raise awareness of blood cancers and draw the attention of various segments of the community to these deadly diseases,” the statement quoted Ghadeer Abdeen, consultant medical oncologist at the King Hussein Cancer Centre and chairperson of the JSH’s Scientific Committee, as saying at the meeting, held in collaboration with Janssen — a pharmaceutical company of Johnson and Johnson.
Established in 2008, the JSH aims at raising the scientific level of physicians in the field of blood diseases and cancer; encouraging scientific research and participation in seminars, lectures, workshops and conferences locally, regionally and internationally; and sharing experiences with medical associations in Jordan and abroad.
