Senate president, Canadian ambassador discuss ties, region

AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez and Canadian Ambassador to Jordan Donica Pottie on Sunday discussed means to bolster bilateral relations in various fields, especially the economic, parliamentary and political fields, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During the meeting, which was attended by Chairman of the Jordanian-Canadian Parliamentary Friendship Committee George Hazboun, Fayez praised the “strong” Jordanian-Canadian relations, which are based on mutual respect and cooperation, highlighting the two countries’ agreement in regard to a number of issues of mutual interest. 

On the political situation in the region, Fayez said that despite regional crises and conflicts, Jordan is “politically and securely strong”.

However, he added that Jordan faces a number of economic challenges as a result of regional conflicts, hosting Syrian refugees, and the repercussions of the pandemic.

Fayez praised Canada's support for Jordan and the stances of His Majesty King Abdullah in regard to the necessity to find a political solution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with international resolutions and the two-state solution.

Pottie stressed the importance of the pivotal role His Majesty King Abdullah plays in relation to ending conflicts in the region, lauding Jordan’s efforts to host and provide services to Syrian refugees.

The Canadian ambassador also stressed her country's keenness to enhance cooperation with Jordan in various fields.

The two sides highlighted the importance of the international community's cooperation to resolve disputes in the region and to restore its security and stability.
