AMMAN — HRH Princess Basma on Thursday evening inaugurated the graduation ceremony of the 9th batch of MA holders from the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) in the presence of HRH Princess Rym.

Thirty-one students were granted their master’s degree in journalism and media, the Jordan News Agency, reported.

Princess Basma stressed the responsibility of media outlets in conveying “precise” information, underlying the need to commit by principles of professional press.

The Princess added that accuracy, credibility and integrity without bias are at the heart of professional press, adding that journalists should have humanitarian responsibility and accountability in light of the rapid development of mass media technologies, Petra said.

Princess Basma highlighted the role of the JMI’s AKEED online portal in circulating the right information by checking the authenticity of news reports.

The Princess also highlighted the importance of the JMI’s programmes in equipping its graduates with the required skills and the institute’s role in improving journalism in Jordan.

Dean of the JMI Basim Tweissi reviewed the achievements of the institute, saying that it has recently received media and information literacy reward from the UNESCO and the Global Coalition for Media and Information Literacy.

He also said that the reward is a global recognition of Jordan’s achievements and the JMI which, Tweisi said, “integrates information systems with community and youth organisations”.

He also said that social media is exploited to mislead the public and serve personal agendas complicating efforts to qualify ethics-based journalists, according to Petra.
