AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a June Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to eight years in prison after convicting him of the attempted murder of a man in Jerash in November 2019.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of attempted murder on November 28, and handed him a 12-year prison term.

However, the court reduced the sentence to eight years because the victim dropped the charges against the defendant.

Court papers said that the victim was standing next to his house when the defendant approached him.

The defendant asked the victim to walk with him to discuss an old feud, but the victim refused.

"The defendant drew a knife and stabbed the victim on various parts of his body," according to the court documents.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he was treated for deep wounds to the neck and stomach, the court papers maintained.

The defendant did not contest the ruling.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the eight-year ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised of judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Nayef Samarat, Hammad Ghzawi, Qassem Dughmi and Mohammad Khashashneh.
