AMMAN — Police have arrested a man who allegedly murdered his brother in 1996, the Public Security Directorate announced on Tuesday.

The PSD, in a statement, said that one of its teams of investigators that is tasked with reopening cold cases has finally concluded its investigation into the crime.

The 30-year-old victim was found dead from a gunshot wound in an uninhabited area north of Amman in 1996.

The identity of the perpetrator was not determined at the time, and the case remained unsolved.

The PSD media spokesperson said that the case file was reopened a few weeks ago, adding that investigators exerted efforts to collect information in a timely manner.

The victim’s brother, identified as a suspect, was arrested on charges of premeditated murder.

The suspect admitted to committing the crime due to a quarrel between him and the victim.

The suspect fired a pistol, injuring his brother, after which he fled the crime scene and discarded the murder weapon, the statement said.

Photos of the crime scene and the victim’s wounds were found to be consistent with the suspect’s testimony.

The case was referred to the Public Prosecutor, who ordered that the suspect be detained at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigation.
