Lower House refers 3 bills to legal committee

AMMAN — The Lower House on Wednesday referred draft amendments of the Execution Law, National Military and Reserve Service Law and the Penal Code Law, to its respective legal committee.

The Execution Law prohibits the imprisonment of the debtor, in the case the debt amount is less than JD5,000 or if the debtor fails to meet a contractual obligation of three years after the law comes into force, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The draft law also stipulates that an individual shall not be imprisoned during the bankruptcy proceedings, as well as prohibits imprisonment for insolvent debtors and in the case that the imprisonment of debtors has negative social effects or negatively impacts the debtor’s household, provided that failure to debt imprisonment does not prevent precautionary measures from being enforced, including a travel ban.

The bill related to the national military and reserve service introduces an e-document approved by the armed forces.

The amendments also introduce tougher penalties for those involved in crimes in connection with community safety, and begging, in addition to those who "terrorise" others.

Various alternatives to penalties were introduced as well.  

The draft amendments also intensify penalties against those who are found guilty of breaching their commitments in the contracts signed with the government or with any public administrations for any gains or harm to the public administrations.
