AMMAN — Unemployment rates in the Kingdom have reached “unprecedented” levels, which require cooperation and joint action, Labour Minister Nayef Steitieh said on Tuesday.

During a meeting held at the Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC), Steitieh noted that the ministry’s role focuses on offering services to companies to ease difficulties and preserve and generate more jobs, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The minister highlighted the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors, underlining that the latter is the main workforce provider.

He noted that 95 per cent of private sector institutions are small- and medium-sized enterprises.

ACC President Khalil Hajj Tawfiq stressed the need for all stakeholders to combine forces to combat unemployment, the biggest challenge facing the economy.

Hajj Tawfiq also referred to several demands from the commercial and service sectors that were affected by the pandemic. He called for increased support for these sectors with the implementation of programmes.

Also speaking during the meeting, Social Security Corporation (SSC) Director General Hazem Rahahleh reviewed key items of the SSC’s amended law.

The amendments aim to enhance social protection pillars and realise economic and social security for subscribers, retirees and their families, he said.

Rahahleh added that the compulsory subscription of workers in the SSC is to protect them.

He noted that the corporation’s role is not limited to paying pensions and that there is “a comprehensive system” of other insurances in place, such as support for subscribers injured in the workplace.
