Kingdom an example of coexistence despite regional unrest — PM

AMMAN — At a time when countless homes, bridges, roads and buildings have been destroyed in the Arab world, Jordan, despite its limited resources, has set an example of tolerance and coexistence, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said Monday.

Inaugurating the 31st session of the Arab Housing Ministers Council in Amman — organised by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation, Ensour said the past four years have been “black” in the region, to the extent that many Arabs now live in tents.

But the premier stressed the need to work and rise above frustration and sadness.

Also speaking at the opening ceremony, Public Works Minister Sami Halaseh said the council has worked during the previous decades on examining housing policies in the Arab region, taking into consideration the natural, economic and social capabilities of each country, with the aim of offering decent housing conditions to all citizens.

Jordan, Halaseh added, has focused, through its membership in the council, on unifying building codes and quality standards to produce a comprehensive system on modern, secure housing.

A number of Arab housing ministers are participating in the meeting.

Arab League Representative Jamal Eddin Jadallah congratulated Jordan on assuming the council’s presidency.

He said all Arab countries view securing decent housing for their citizens as a major political, economic and social priority due to the current regional circumstances.

Jadallah also called for drafting an Arab strategy for sustainable housing and urban development.
