AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday began his official visit to Tokyo, Japan, by meeting Head of the Jordanian-Japanese Parliamentary Friendship Committee Kazunori Tanaka, a Royal Court statement said. 

During the meeting, His Majesty highlighted the importance of boosting bilateral relations, which were launched 62 years ago, in the parliamentary field and exchanging visits and expertise to serve mutual interests.

He briefed his Japanese host on the outcome of September 20 Lower House elections. 

Talks covered the burdens Jordan is shouldering due to the Syrian refugee crisis, with the King thanking Tokyo, a major donor to the Kingdom and refugees. 

The Monarch reviewed the Kingdom’s positions on regional and international issues and its efforts, alongside active members in the international community, including Japan, in working to reach comprehensive political solutions to regional crises. 

The King also highlighted the importance of continuing global efforts to combat terrorism and terrorist groups through a holistic approach. 

For his part, Tanaka commended King Abdullah’s efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, commending Jordan’s humanitarian role in dealing with the Syrian crisis and providing the refugees with the services they need. 

Tanaka stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted financial and technical support for Jordan by the international community to enable it to continue providing services to the Syrian refugees and supporting host communities, by sustaining and strengthening vital sectors such as health, education, energy and water. 

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, King’s Office Director Jafar Hassan and Planning and International Cooperation Minister Imad Fakhoury attended the meeting.

Also on Wednesday, His Majesty discussed economic and cultural cooperation with Chairman of the Jordanian-Japanese Friendship Society Mikio Sasaki. 

During the visit, His Majesty is scheduled to discuss bilateral relations and regional and international developments with Japanese Emperor Akihito, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and senior officials, especially regarding efforts to combat terrorism. 

The last visit His Majesty made to Japan was in 2014, where he met with the emperor, the premier, senior officials and leading corporate executives.

HRH Prince Feisal was sworn in as Regent.
