AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday received Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby for a meeting that covered Jordan’s efforts in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and preserving its identity as a unifying city of peace.

King Abdullah said Christians are an important part of the region, rooted in its culture and history, noting that Jordan offers a model of Muslim-Christian harmony for the region and the world, a Royal Court statement said.

Discussions addressed Jordan’s efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and harmony.

Archbishop Welby commended His Majesty’s efforts in pursuit of peace and stability in the region, and promoting dialogue and tolerance through initiatives like the UN-endorsed World Interfaith Harmony Week, marked during the first week of February.

Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi, Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas and the UK’s Ambassador to Jordan Edward Oakden attended the meeting, according to the statement.
