Jordanian scholar honoured for developing AI algorithms for early cancer detection

AMMAN — Taiwan has honoured Jordanian scholar Mohammed Bassam Al Manaseer, from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Taipei National University of Technology, for developing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for the early detection of various types of cancer, notably liver and kidney cancers, and most recently breast cancer.

Manaseer, in his remarks to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, over the phone, said that the new artificial intelligence algorithm reads x-ray images and detects breast cancer in its early stages within a few seconds, and with an accuracy rate of 96 per cent.

He also added that the algorithm reduces the amount of erroneous tests, especially false negative results, by 4 per cent. He said: "It took me a year to develop the recent algorithm," noting that Cheng Hsin General Hospital has honoured him for his efforts in this field, and pointed out that a number of the algorithms were made in 2018.
