Jordanian envoy to US attends MESA meeting

First round of consultations focus on political, security pillars

AMMAN — Jordan on Thursday participated in the first round of the Middle East Strategic Alliance’s (MESA) political and security consultations held in Washington, DC.

According to the US Department of State’s website, the consultations covered MESA’s objectives related to politics and security.

Convening at the US Department of State, the meeting also saw the participation of Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the US, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sufian Qudah, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The consultations also included formative exchanges of MESA’s strategic objectives, according to the department’s website.

Qudah said that the Kingdom supports every collective effort that aims to reach solutions to regional crises and achieve security and stability in the Middle East.

Jordanian Ambassador to the US Dina Kawar represented the Kingdom at the meeting.

Reuters reported in July of 2018 that the Trump administration was pushing for an alliance among Gulf Arab States, Egypt and Jordan as a potential way to counter Iran’s influence in the Middle East and build cooperation amongst participating countries.

A government official told The Jordan Times in July that the Kingdom was looking into the proposal.
