AMMAN — MP Yahya Saud, head of the Lower House Palestine Committee, on Sunday called for supporting the key role of the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's holy Islamic and Christian sites and urged Islamic countries to back Jordan's historic role in the city.

Saud made his remarks at the 13th session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which started in Tehran with the participation of 54 Islamic nations, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Arab group taking part in the summit elected Jordan as member of the permanent cultural, legal and inter-faith panel.

Saud highlighted the importance of visiting Palestine and the Gaza strip in order to end Israeli-imposed embargo on the enclave, refuting allegations that visits are part of normalisation with Israel.

Regarding UNRWA funding, MP Hussein Qaisi voiced Amman's rejection of any halt of aid provided to the organisation, adding that the refugee issue must be resolved within a final settlement of the Palestinian cause.
