Jordan Labour Watch calls for improving women’s working conditions on Int’l Women Day

AMMAN — The Jordan Labour Watch, an affiliate of the Phenix Centre for Economic and Informatics Studies, on Tuesday called for the improvement of women’s working conditions in the private sector, in terms of both policies and practice, to enhance their overall economic participation.

In a position paper issued on International Women's Day, the watchdog stressed the importance of empowering women working in Jordan’s organised and unorganised sectors to enjoy their rights, in addition to basic principles of labour and proper work standards, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The paper also indicated that women's economic participation rate in Jordan has been stable over the past 10 years, reaching 14 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared with 53.6 per cent for males during the same year.

The watchdog also recommended reviewing various strategies and programmes aimed at enhancing women's economic role and labour market participation in relevant government and civil society institutions.

On supporting stay-at-home women's businesses, the paper called for creating an entity to run, direct, support and enhance women's skills in developing their projects and increasing their economic participation.

On public transport, the paper recommended enhancing the public transport system to meet the needs of women to ensure that they get to their workplaces easily and safely.
