AMMAN — Jordan on Saturday voiced support for the United Nations Security Council's resolution that calls for a ceasefire in Sudan during the holy month of Ramadan.
Sufian Qudah, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, voiced Jordan’s hope for an end to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. He emphasised that the resolution, which garnered the support of a majority of the Security Council’s members, could initiate efforts to resolve the Sudanese crisis, as reported by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
Qudah further said that Ramadan presents an opportunity for all involved parties to agree to a ceasefire and commence a comprehensive national dialogue.
He stressed that such a dialogue should prioritise Sudan’s national interests and strive to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity while ensuring the protection of its citizens’ lives.
The United Nations’ World Food Programme recently warned that Sudan’s nearly 11-month war between rival generals “risks triggering the world’s largest hunger crisis”.
The war between army chief Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has killed tens of thousands, destroyed infrastructure and crippled Sudan’s economy.
It has also uprooted more than eight million people, in addition to two million who had already been forced from their homes before the conflict — making it the world’s largest displacement crisis, AFP reported.
