Japanese embassy hands over medical equipment to Al Farouq Society for Orphans Care in Irbid camp

AMMAN — The Japanese embassy on Tuesday handed over medical equipment to Al Farouq Society for Orphans Care in Irbid Palestinian refugee camp.

Japan’s Ambassador to Jordan Okuyama Jiro and President of Al Farouq Society for Orphans Care Husein Abu Dubai attended the event, according to an embassy statement.

In March 2022, the government of Japan extended a grant of $92,513 to Al Farouq Society for the provision of medical equipment under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme.

The grant aims to enhance the quality of medical services provided at the Al Farouq Society’s clinic in Irbid Palestinian refugee camp, through the provision of a new X-ray machine, ultrasound equipment and blood analyser. 

The new medical equipment will provide more accurate and immediate diagnoses and identify a wide range of diseases at an affordable price, the statement said. 

It will also improve the quality of medical services for the Palestinian refugees and other underprivileged people in Irbid. The clinic is now able to treat approximately 11,000 patients per year.

In his speech the ambassador expressed his appreciation to Al Farouq Society’s social contribution.

“According to UNRWA, the Irbid Camp has the largest number of residents with chronic health problems among Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. However, almost half of Palestinian refugees do not have health insurance. It makes this project essential to reach out and provide sufficient medical services to camp residents and underprivileged people in Irbid,” the ambassador said

As part of the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, Japan has extended more than $10 million for 157 projects to non-governmental organisations, schools, hospitals, and local governments in Jordan since 1993.
