AMMAN — Japan appreciates Jordan’s efforts in hosting Syrian refugees despite its scarce resources and is ready to provide assistance to the Kingdom in vital fields, the head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said Saturday.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, JICA President Akihito Tanaka said the agency is committed to supporting the Kingdom as it provides humanitarian care for Syrian and Palestinian refugees.

He underlined the agency’s interest in supporting Jordan’s health sector and implementing water supply projects, especially for host communities.

Tanaka said Jordan plays a major role in working towards stability and security in the region.

Ensour commended the “deep” historical ties Jordan and Japan enjoy at all levels, thanking JICA for implementing water, tourism, health, culture and construction projects in Jordan.

He highlighted the challenges facing the Kingdom due to the influx of Syrian refugees and the insufficient assistance provided by the international community.

Also on Saturday, Tanaka paid a visit to the Zaatari Refugee Camp and was briefed on the services provided to its residents.

He commended the “extraordinary” efforts the Kingdom is exerting in opening its borders to Syrian refugees, calling on the international community to provide more support to Jordan.

UNHCR Representative to Jordan Andrew Harper highlighted the services provided to Syrians by the agency along with other humanitarian organisations working in the camp.

Japan is a key donor to Jordan, providing the Kingdom with about $764 million from 1999 until March 2014.

Tanaka’s visit marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Jordan and Japan, and the 40th anniversary of economic relations.

The JICA president is scheduled to hold a press conference at the Planning Ministry on Sunday at noon.
