AMMAN — Interior Minister Mazen Faraya said on Tuesday that maintaining local security and internal order are fundamental pillars of the country.

Speaking at the weekly Government Communication Forum, Faraya said, "Jordan is a safe and stable country that respects fundamental rights and freedoms and is governed by the rule of law

He also highlighted the high level of inter-agency coordination among the security apparatus and other state institutions, noting that crime detection rates in the country are impressive, reaching nearly 100 per cent in homicide cases.

Regarding drug-related offences, the minister reported an increase in detected cases compared with 2023, particularly in the Captagon trade.

"This year, authorities intercepted an additional five million Captagon pills compared with last year," he added, noting that the demand for drug rehabilitation services remains low, with 1,368 individuals seeking treatment at addiction centres in 2023, either as inpatients or outpatients.

Faraya also stressed the ministry's commitment to supporting the Anti-Narcotics Department through a comprehensive approach that enhances operational efficiency and resource allocation noting that 25,000 individuals were prosecuted for drug offences in 2023, with a conviction rate of 91 per cent.

“Regional cooperation including Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon to address drug cases has already started,” the minister added.

On the issues of illegal immigration, the refugee situation, and road safety, Faraya noted a 21 per cent decrease in fatalities from road accidents. Regarding the refugee situation, the minister noted that policies and strategies concerning Syrian refugees are under review.
