High-Level conference on gender quality in the Euro-Mediterranean region to begin in Nicosia

NICOSIA — A high-level conference on women will commence in Nicosia, Cyprus on Thursday with the aim of improving gender equality in the Euro-Mediterranean context.

The two-day event entitled “High-Level Conference: Women for the Mediterranean”, will bring together politicians, local and governmental organisations and journalists to discuss concrete actions that need to be undertaken to effectively improve gender equality in the Euro-Mediterranean context, according to a press release by the organisers.

The event will also be a space for the participants to engage in a concrete discussion and exchange of lessons learned,  the press release stated. The Republic of Cyprus is hosting the high level conference, which is co-organised by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Commissioner for Gender Equality of Cyprus, the press release added.

The event will discuss and adopt the 2024-2025 Roadmap for Implementation, aiming to operationalise the 5th UfM Ministerial Declaration on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society, the press release stated.

The main topics of the Ministerial Declaration include women’s economic empowerment, women and climate change and violence against women and girls, according to the press release.

Moreover, a specific panel on gender stereotypes and media will allow to showcase Cyprus’ and other countries’ good practices on this specific issue, stated the press release.

The ideas generated during the conference on discussions will directly shape the concrete initiatives and actions to operationalise the RoadMap for Implementation of the Ministerial Declaration 2024-2025, added the press release.
