AMMAN — Minister of State for Media Affairs and Government Spokesperson Jumana Ghunaimat on Saturday said the media plays an important social role in empowering women and addressing challenges in communities.

During the inauguration of the “empowering women through community media” project in Maan, Ghunaimat said the media plays a role in “improving the stereotypical image of Jordanian women, and communicating the reality of citizens’ concerns in order to achieve professional, objective and balanced media discourse”.

“Jordanian women in various positions throughout the different municipalities, including Maan, need more support and empowerment in showcasing their abilities, achievements and addressing challenges through community media initiatives,” Ghunaimat stated.

In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Ghunaimat stressed the government’s prioritisation of people’s right to know, adding that the gap of trust between the government and the community is one of the main challenges facing the reform of official media discourse.

She added that the gap of trust was the result of years of difficult conditions, broken promises and the lack of strategic implementation, which has to be addressed through community media and tangible policies.

Ghunaimat said the government has taken action to fight corruption which includes four legislative amendments meant to strengthen institutions that deal with public funds, Petra reported.

She said that the government was aware of the threat posed by unemployment, especially among youth, adding that the government plans to provide 30,000 jobs by the end of this year.

“The current phase is a difficult one and poses several challenges and dangers that are multifaceted. These include Jordan’s location in an unstable region and its position on the Palestinian cause, which needs a cohesive front, in addition to economic challenges, all which require realistic media discourse that does not increase expectations,” Ghunaimat affirmed.
