Gas well explosion spreads H2S in Aqaba

AMMAN — An explosion in a gas well in the Israeli town of Eilat sent strong emissions of gas all over Aqaba late Wednesday, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The agency quoted an official source as saying that concerned parties were following up on the incident, pointing out that different amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) had leaked from the site of the explosion in Eilat and spread to Aqaba, just across the Bay of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Commissioner for Economic Development and Investment Affairs Sharhabeel Madi said the gas concentration was measured at 80ppm (concentration measurement unit) at the beginning of the gas leak, and upon treatment, it was lowered to 40ppm, while the safety threshold is 30ppm. The gas, which is mixed with cooking gas for leak detection purposes, can be toxic if its concentration is extremely high in the air.
