AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Saturday announced that the first phase of a LED street lighting retrofit project was completed.
The first phase included all streetlights in residential neighbourhoods where some 125,000 units were replaced in 22 areas, a move towards meeting the requirements of smart cities.
According to Mohammad Faouri, director of traffic operations at GAM, the second phase of the LED street lighting project will be launched in the coming period to include the replacement of nearly 25,000 main streets’ traditional lights with energy saving lighting units, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He added that the second phase focuses on the establishment of a control centre, which provides intensity control and detects faults, noting that the move will result in 50 per cent savings on the municipality’s bill.
