AMMAN — The fourth National Consultation Session of the Stockholm +50 Conference on Wednesday incorporated youth and persons with disabilities in the process to prepare the national report to be submitted prior to the conference.

Speaking during the session, Maha Maaytah, director of policies and international cooperation at the Environment Ministry, highlighted the need for communication and cooperation on environmental issues that support sustainable and resilient paths for the Kingdom.

This report would show Jordan’s trends, key achievements, opportunities and challenges in the area of environment, Maaytah added.

“There has been notable progress, despite all the challenges facing the country,” said Maaytah, who added that having green growth operational plans for six sectors is one of the principal achievements to become more sustainable.

Suggestions and recommendations made by participants included: Setting clear objectives and effective social inclusion and citizenship policies, in addition to developing participatory operational plans, and giving more prominence to matters related to environmental protection.

The first national workshop for the Stockholm +50 conference, with the support of the Swedish and Kenyan governments, was held at the end of March. The second session was organised in Aqaba in April, during which various recommendations were submitted for establishing environmental policies.

Stockholm+50 is an international meeting convened by the United Nations General Assembly, that is set to be held on June 2-3,  2022, commemorating the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and celebrating 50 years of global environmental action.

The meeting will be held under the theme “Stockholm+50: A healthy planet for the prosperity of all — our responsibility, our opportunity”, according to the Stockholm+50 website.
