FM phones PLO official over Israeli aggression in Jenin

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday warned about the “catastrophic repercussions” of the Israeli aggression perpetrated against civilians in Jenin earlier in the day.

During a phone call with Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Executive Committee Secretary General Hussein Al Sheikh, Safadi called on the international community to take immediate and effective action to halt the aggression and provide protection for the Palestinian people.

Safadi condemned the Israeli incursion in Jenin, stressing that the aggression presents a dangerous escalation that poses the significant threat of widespread violence.

The recurring Israeli attacks on Palestinian cities will only worsen tensions fuelled by illegitimate Israeli measures that undermine the two-state solution and extinguish any hope for a just and comprehensive peace, Safadi said.

Safadi demanded the immediate cessation of all unilateral Israeli actions, including the invasion of Palestinian cities, settlement activities, land confiscation and the economic blockade imposed on Palestinians. He called for genuine engagement in negotiations to bring an end to the occupation and resolve the conflict based on the two-state solution, which he highlighted as the sole path to prevent further deterioration.

Safadi and Al Sheikh underscored the importance of Israel fulfilling its responsibilities as the occupying power, adhering to previously signed agreements and fulfilling its commitments outlined in the Aqaba and Sharm El Sheikh Meetings.

Both officials emphasised that the Israeli practices, which further entrench the lack of any potential political resolution, bear direct responsibility for the deterioration witnessed in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Safadi and Al Sheikh discussed collaborative approaches, both regionally and internationally, to effectively confront the dangerous Israeli escalation and the severe threat it poses to the overall security of the region.
