AMMAN — Five people were injured on Saturday when a building's expansion project that was under construction collapsed in Ruseifa, according to the Civil Defence Department (CDD).

The injured were evacuated to Prince Feisal Hospital in Zarqa, 22km east of Amman, where one of the injured was reported to be in critical condition, while the other four were listed in fair condition.

The collapse happened while workers were revamping a newly added extension to an older building.

Prince Feisal Hospital Director Mohammad Kharabsheh told The Jordan Times that the one in critical condition is in his 30s and is an Egyptian national.

The injury in his left leg resulted in a fracture below the knee, as well as damage to blood vessels, nerves and muscles.

"He received emergency care until the bleeding stopped, then his family took him to a private hospital," Kharabsheh said.

The owner of the house where the extension collapsed, who is around 70 years old, had a medium injury and was admitted to hospital under supervision.

In an accident on Thursday, two people died when their car overturned in Southern Shuneh.

The CDD dealt with 141 incidents with 67 injuries around the Kingdom over the course of 24 hours, it said in a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, on Saturday.
