Dust from storm ‘Daniel’ could impair visibility, public urged caution

AMMAN — As Mediterranean storm “Daniel” starts to impact Jordan, dropping visibility to 4,000 metres, health professionals are urging people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to stay away from dust and preferably stay at home.

According to ArabiaWeather,  a private weather forecasting company, the latest satellite images indicate that several parts of the country are experiencing high concentrations of dust, leading to reduced surface visibility in both Aqaba and the capital, Amman.

The dusty conditions were carried into the Kingdom on Tuesday from Egyptian territories by winds from storm “Daniel”, the website said. 

ArabiaWeather advises caution due to the high levels of dust in the air and the potential health implications for individuals with eye and respiratory issues. They also recommend being vigilant of reduced surface visibility on the roads, especially highways. 

Abdel Rahman Shaher, a respiratory specialist, expressed concern about the current dusty conditions in Jordan.

“High levels of dust in the atmosphere can have detrimental effects on individuals with respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),” Shaher told The Jordan Times.

It’s crucial for such patients to stay indoors, keep windows closed and use air purifiers if available. “Patients are advised to put on a face mask if they need to leave their houses,” Shaher said.

Shaher also recommended patients have their inhalers or medications on hand in case of exacerbations. “If symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice promptly is essential,” Shaher said.

According to ArabiaWeather, dusty conditions are expected to continue through Thursday.

According to the Jordanian Meteorological Department, these weather conditions are expected to continue until Thursday, with strong south winds causing high dust levels and potential visibility issues.
