Domestic worker recruiting agents association calls for insurance programme

AMMAN — Discussions on the creation of a comprehensive domestic workers insurance programme that safeguards the rights of all concerned parties have been consistently postponed, according to the president of the Recruiting Agents Association (RAA).
“There is still some sort of inaction and reluctance to move forward with the issuance of insurance for domestic workers that guarantees the rights of all parties involved,” said association president Lawrence Abu Zaid.
“It is time that the relevant parties set the record straight, especially given that domestic workers recruitment regulation was signed into law three years ago,” he told The Jordan Times on Monday.
Abu Zaid added that the relevant parties have been negotiating an acceptable format for the insurance since the legislation was passed.
Generally speaking, comprehensive domestic worker insurance should ensure that the rights of all the concerned parties, including domestic workers, recruiting agencies and recruiters of domestic workers, are safeguarded and guaranteed.
A Labour Ministry statement made available to The Jordan Times showed that Article 15 of the 2020 legislation on recruitment agencies governs labour affairs and provides guidelines, obliging agencies with certain provisions during the first three months of the worker’s stay in the Kingdom. The statement noted that the ministry is committed to facilitating processes concerned with the protection of labour rights. Despite multiple attempts by The Jordan Times to contact the office of Muayyad Al Kloub, head of the Jordan Insurance Federation, he was unavailable for comment.
