Crown Prince vows more pro-youth efforts

By JT - Dec 10,2016 - Last updated at Dec 10,2016

AMMAN — HRH Crown Prince Hussein underlined achievements made in youth advocacy and vowed more would come.

Remembering UN Security Council Resolution 2250, which was adopted on December 9, 2015, the Crown Prince said in an Instagram post: "A year ago, the hard and devoted efforts of #OurJordan bore the fruit by endorsing the first resolution in the history of the UN Security Council on Youth, Peace, and Security. Great steps have been achieved and many are yet to come."

The resolution was adopted following Crown Prince Hussein’s initiative on the role of the youth in enhancing peace and combating extremism, after he addressed a UN Security Council meeting on “Maintenance of international peace and security: The role of youth in countering violent extremism and promoting peace”.

The April 15, 2015 address came as part of a thematic debate organised by Jordan during its presidency of the UN Security Council.

The Crown Prince was the youngest ever person to address the council.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon tasked the UN Peacebuilding Support Office, the UN Office CEO and the UN secretary general’s envoy on youth to prepare a report on the implementation of the resolution and identify the necessary budget, before presenting it in January 2017.

The decision urges a series of measures to increase representation of youth in decision making at all levels.

One of the major initiatives by the Crown Prince, the “Global Forum of Youth, Peace and Security”, hosted by Jordan under his patronage in August the same year, was envisaged as a “turning point towards a new international agenda on youth, peace and security”, according to the initiative’s literature.

In the first gathering of this kind, stakeholders came together to agree on a common vision and roadmap to partner with young people to prevent conflict, counter violent extremism and build lasting peace.
