Cooler than average temps Friday, slight increase forecast Saturday

AMMAN — Cool spring weather is expected to prevail on Friday, as a wet and moderate air mass continues to affect the country, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Thursday.

The moderate air mass, caused by wet winds blowing from above the Mediterranean, started affecting the country on Tuesday night following a four-day hot air mass, during which temperatures reached a high of 39ºC in Amman and above 45ºC in Aqaba and the Jordan Valley.

Temperatures on Friday are projected to be slightly below their annual average of this time of the year of 28ºC, according to JMD meteorologist Laila Shaheen, who noted that the weather is expected to be fair in mountainous areas and moderate across the country.

Low-altitude clouds are forecast during the early morning on Friday in mountainous areas, according to the JMD, which said that daytime temperatures may be 26ºC, dropping to a low of 14ºC at night in Amman and winds will be northwesterly moderate.

"A slight rise in temperatures is expected on Saturday, when the country will be affected by an upper trough. 

Moderate weather is forecast in mountainous areas, while it will be relatively hot in the badia and plains and hot in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Aqaba," Shaheen noted.

Temperatures are expected to range between a maximum of 30ºC and a minimum of 19ºC in Amman, while winds are forecast to be southwesterly moderate, turning by nighttime to westerly moderate, according to the JMD.

Another minor increase in temperatures is expected for Sunday, according to Shaheen, who said that the weather is expected to be relatively hot across the country and hot in the Dead Sea, Aqaba and the Jordan Valley.

Daytime temperatures are forecast at 31ºC and 18ºC at night in the capital, and winds will be northwesterly moderate to brisk at times.
