AMMAN — Preventive Security Department personnel arrested a person in possession of a “large group” of archaeological artefacts and a gun in western Irbid, the Public Security Department’s spokesperson said on Saturday.

He added that personnel in the northern region received a tip about a person who was hiding artefacts and guns in his house in Irbid’s Kora District, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Security personnel arrested the man and searched his house, where they found statues and coins made of gold and bronze which were sent to archaeological experts.

The experts confirmed that 170 pieces were of historical value and belonged to the Roman and Byzantine eras, the spokesperson said, adding that investigation was ongoing.
