Almost 90% of women over 15 educated, but only 16% in labour market — DoS

AMMAN — Only 16 per cent of women were in the local labour market in 2013, according to figures released by the Department of Statistics (DoS) Wednesday.

The figures, which were released on the occasion of International Women’s Day, marked on March 8, indicated that 53.9 of women in the labour market work in the education sector and 45.8 per cent are employed in the medical and social sectors.

According to DoS, which releases these figures annually on this occasion, 89.9 per cent of women aged 15 and above are educated.

Turning to the judicial sector, the department revealed that the percentage of female judges jumped from 6.2 in 2009 to 16 per cent in 2013.

Females owning property also increased in the same period, according to DoS.

In 2009, the percentage of women owning land was 17 per cent, while owners of apartments stood at 22.1 per cent. In 2013, 20.2 per cent of women were land owners and 24.7 owned real estate, DoS said.

The percentage of female Internet users in 2013 was 43.5, an increase of 74 per cent compared to 2009.

The population of Jordan by the end of 2013 was 6.530 million, with women constituting 48.5 per cent, according to DoS.

The percentage of women who were never married in 2013 was 33.4, while the figure stood at 43.6 per cent for unmarried men, DoS statistics said.

Divorced men represented 0.4 per cent of males in Jordan, while divorced women were 1.2 per cent, according to DoS.
