AMMAN — Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al Najjar, the general manager of Ahmad Yousif Al Tarawneh & Partner Company and representatives of the Arab Business Contracting Company, on Sunday signed an agreement to implement a water transmission project in Irbid.
The project, valued at JD7 million, will be funded by the German Development Bank (KfW), according to a Water Ministry statement.
The agreement primarily aims to improve environmental conditions and provide additional water resources for irrigation purposes.
Najjar emphasised that the water pipeline will transport approximately 10 million cubic metres of treated water annually to support irrigation in the Jordan Valley.
Furthermore, the project aims to improve access to potable water and increase its usage, he added.
The project is part of the water authority's progressive programme, which focuses on reusing treated water for restricted agriculture and diverse industrial applications.
The project is a key component of the government's climate change mitigation measures in the water and sanitation sector, as it ensures the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by around 6,600 tonnes, the minister said.
The minister expressed gratitude for the support and contributions from funders and donors, particularly the European Union and Germany through the KfW.
Director of the ministry’s Planning and Management Department, Sultan Al Mashaqbah, highlighted that the concerned parties are committed to completing construction on the project within an 18-month timeframe.
