AMMAN — Nearly 5,600 housing units have been completed under a recently-concluded Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) shelter project in Jerash, Irbid and Ajloun, the NRC said on Tuesday.
Under the project, funded by the UK’s Department for International Development, the NRC provided financial incentives and technical support to Jordanian landlords to complete construction of housing units, which were then offered to Syrian refugees rent-free for a fixed period of time.
NRC shelter specialist Elias Jourdi said the project responded to the lack of available adequate housing in the governorates.
“NRC continues to coordinate with all actors to advocate for scaling up of the shelter response in Jordan to support the immediate humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees and strengthen the resilience of Jordanian host communities,” he added.
