Protecting wildlife

After the hunting of 10 gazelles in front of cameras in Jordan, near the Syrian border, awareness has been raised about the need to enhance efforts to protect and sustain wildlife in the country.

Wildlife represents a significant element for the tourism industry in Jordan; it provides great opportunities to enhance the nature-based tourism in the country, including ecotourism, wildlife tourism and bird-watching tourism.

Protecting and sustaining wildlife, the different types of fauna and flora, is crucial to the success of sustainable natural tourism in Jordan.

Despite government and NGO bodies’ efforts to protect wildlife, huge damage has been noted in the different natural sites in the country, which proves that much should still be done to protect nature.

To this end, the media plays an important role in raising local communities’ awareness on the significance of fauna and flora as important tourism resources.

Protection laws and regulations should be enacted to prevent environmental damage and wildlife trade.

Furthermore, wildlife management should be improved by using new strategies and mechanisms to deal with the threat to wildlife in Jordan.

Protecting nature reserves and establishing new wildlife sanctuaries could be vital to sustaining fauna and flora in the country.
