Juventus in Champions League form with Higuain and Pjanic

By - Sep 11,2016 - Last updated at Sep 11,2016

ROME — Juventus’ two prized acquisitions were on full display in a convincing 3-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A on Saturday.

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice in the opening 10 minutes and Miralem Pjanic added another before the break as the Bianconeri warmed up for a Champions League it has designs on winning.

“Everyone says Juve will win everything — the league, Cup and the Champions League. But that hurts us, because we lose perspective,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “We’ve got to play the matches and win them on the pitch.”

Higuain and Pjanic were each making their first starts for Juventus after transferring from rivals Napoli and Roma, respectively.

Higuain’s move broke the Italian transfer fee record at 90 million euros ($100 million) after scoring 36 times last season to break a 66-year-old Serie A mark for goals scored in a single season.

Pjanic, the crafty Bosnia playmaker, arrived for a more modest 32 million euros ($36 million).

Higuain’s new partnership with fellow Argentina forward Paulo Dybala didn’t take long to function. Five minutes in, Dybala provided the through ball for Higuain to finish off a counterattack with an angled shot inside the far post.

Five minutes later, Higuain produced an acrobatic effort to redirect in a headed pass from Sami Khedira.

“The partnership with Dybala is improving. But I just got here. We’ve got time,” Higuain said. “I’m really happy to have come here.”

Pjanic’s first goal of the season came following a rebound of his own shot off the crossbar.

It wasn’t all perfect, though.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon came up empty handed when he leaped to grab a corner, allowing Sassuolo’s Luca Antei to score when the ball bounced off his feet.

It marked the second time Juventus has conceded a goal from a corner this season, after conceding two all of last season.

Still, Juventus has a full nine points from the opening three rounds as it aims to become the first club to win Serie A for six consecutive years.

Napoli, last season’s runner-up, is two points behind in second place after a 3-0 win at Palermo.

On Wednesday, Juventus hosts Sevilla in the Champions League aiming to improve on its runner-up finish from 2015.

Compared to two years ago, Allegri has a much deeper squad to choose from. Among those who started on the bench were standouts such as Mario Mandzukic, Dani Alves, Patrice Evra, Juan Cuadrado, Hernanes and Andrea Barzagli.

Sassuolo was the revelation of Serie A last season, finishing sixth, but has won just one of its opening three matches in this campaign. The club from near Modena was missing its star forward, Domenico Berardi, who was injured.

Napoli-post Higuain

Napoli is doing just fine without Higuain.

Jose Callejon scored twice and Marek Hamsik opened the scoring for the Partenopei in a 3-0 win at Palermo.

After opening with a disappointing 2-2 draw at promoted Pescara, Napoli followed that up with a 4-2 win over AC Milan and has now extended its unbeaten start to three matches.

Hamsik put Napoli ahead early in the second half with a shot from the centre of the area that went in off the crossbar and Callejon doubled the lead three minutes later by crouching down for a header after being left unmarked inside the box.

Callejon added another with a shot from the edge of the area.

Often obscured during Higuain’s tenure at Napoli, the former Real Madrid striker Callejon has scored four goals in two matches.

Napoli returns to the Champions League at Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday.

Palermo coach Roberto De Zerbi made a disappointing debut after Davide Ballardini’s resignation.

AMMAN — The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Tuesday picked Jordan to host the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The decision was reached following the study of bidding files and the report of the inspection visit to Amman in April.

Jordan Football Association (JFA) General Secretary Sizar Sobar stressed the importance of Jordan’s hosting of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2018 pointing out the development that the women’s game reached to in Jordan and the enhancements in the football facilities and infrastructure under the guidance of JFA President HRH Prince Ali.

“Jordan’s hosting of the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2016 which kicks off September 30 has given a huge boost to Jordanian football as a whole,” Sobar said.

Jordan’s U-16 women’s football team concludes qualifiers

By - Sep 07,2016 - Last updated at Sep 07,2016

AMMAN — The U-16 women’s national football team concluded Group A qualifiers for the 2017 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Women’s Championship.

It scored their only win 4-1 over Guam in its final match after it lost the chance to play for an advanced position for the top two qualifying berths from the group. Jordan went down 2-1 to Thailand then lost 2-0 to Laos  and 4-2 to Myanmar.

Thailand retained the group lead with an unbeaten run. In addition to Jordan, it beat Laos 5-2 and Guam 4-0. Laos finished second after they beat Jordan, in addition to Myanmar 5-2 and Guam 14-1 while Myanmar beat Guam 11-0.

The final day saw Thailand beat Myanmar 2-0 to clinch the top qualifying berth from the group alongside second placed Laos. The qualifiers have brought together 24 teams playing in four groups with the top team from each group advancing to the championship. Last edition’s top four — North Korea, Japan, China and Thailand — have qualified.

Japan has won three of the past six editions of the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship. Jordan’s U-16 team did not qualify to the 2015 AFC U-16 Women’s Championship after qualifying in 2013.

Jordan’s squad seems to have had a tough task with the line-up missing players who are on the U-17 team line-up currently preparing for the Women’s World Cup kicking off September 30 in the Kingdom.

Jordan’s U-19 women’s national team is also reading for Asian Group A qualifiers for the 2017 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship. The qualifiers set for October 29 will see Jordan plays alongside Australia, Singapore and Lebanon and the Northern Mariana Islands. The top team from each group moves to the championship in 2017. The women’s senior national team has also regrouped to start preparations for qualifiers for the 2018 AFC Women’s Championship starting in April 2017.

Wihdat, Faisali to contest JFA Shield semifinals

By - Sep 07,2016 - Last updated at Sep 07,2016

AMMAN — The second event on the 2016/17 football calendar — the Jordan Football Association (JFA) Shield — is set to conclude this weekend when Faisali play Wihdat and Shabab Urdun take on Sahab.

After Round 1, Shabab Urdun led Group B followed by Wihdat while Faisali led Group A followed by Sahab. Super Cup champs Ahli, as well as Ramtha, Jazira and Baqa’a all had a shot at advancing to the knockout Round 2, but were eliminated with Manshieh and That Ras knocked out earlier.

The top two from each group moved to the semis set for September 8 and 9 with the winners advancing to the final on September 16. The winner will receive JD15,000 and the runner-up JD10,000.

Wihdat had earlier announced they would not play the semifinal match following the brawl that ensued after their match against Ramtha. Several fans were injured after Ramtha fans threw stones from outside the stadium. Others were injured trying to flee the scene and were stopped from going onto the stadium by security.

The 2016/17 football season started with Ahli making history when they beat reigning league champs Wihdat 2-1 to win the 34th Super Cup — the first major competition on the calendar. The Jordan Professional League will kick-off on October 22 while the Jordan Cup preliminary round will kick-off October 31 after the conclusion of the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Last season, Wihdat won their third consecutive and 15th league title since they moved up to the professional league in 1975. Faisali beat league and Super Cup titleholders Wihdat 1-0 to clinch the Super Cup while it was Ahli who were the overall better team of the season. After years in the backstage, Ahli beat Shabab Urdun to win their first Jordan Cup final.

The JFA Shield was not played for the past four seasons. Wihdat are a record eight time winners, Faisali seven, Ramtha five, Hussein three, Jazira and Amman twice each, and Shabab Urdun, Kufrsoum and Yarmouk once each. Hussein were finalists seven times. McIlroy answers big questions by winning Deutsche Bank tourney

By - Sep 06,2016 - Last updated at Sep 06,2016

NORTON, Massachusetts — Rory McIlroy has built a record that would seem to make him immune from too much scepticism about his golf game.

He already had four majors at age 25, including the US Open scoring record (268) and the largest margin of victory (8 shots) in the US PGA Championship. In the 30 years of the world ranking, only Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Nick Faldo have spent more time at No. 1 than McIlroy.

Over the long US Labour Day weekend, McIlroy managed to answer three big questions.

He had a reputation for playing his best golf in pristine conditions, strange for a kid who grew up in Northern Ireland.

But when the TPC Boston was at its most dangerous in 40 mph (65 kph) gusts as Hurricane Hermine headed out to the Atlantic, he made seven birdies and closed with a 6-under 65 to make up a six-shot deficit and win the Deutsche Bank Championship.

“Wow, very impressive. Yeah, that’s a mighty round of golf,” said Paul Casey, who had to settle for a runner-up finish.

Worse yet, McIlroy had a tendency to lose the will to battle when he was falling too far behind. That opportunity presented itself early in the first round, when McIlroy had to make a 15-foot putt to salvage triple bogey and already was 4-over-par just three holes into the tournament.

He played the next 15 holes in 4 under to get back to even par, which contributed mightily to his 20th victory worldwide.

“I don’t know if I quit, but I definitely let my shoulders slump and let my head drop,” McIlroy said. “I’ve just not been as positive about the situation as I could have been. It’s happened to me many times before, but you learn with experience and a little bit more maturity that it’s four-round golf tournaments. It’s a long time. There’s a lot that can happen, and I proved that to myself this week.”

He shot 67 in the second round, then ended his third round with a 3-iron that caught the lip of the cup on the par-5 18th hole, settling for a tap-in eagle and a 66. And then he went one shot better in the final round, a 65 that matched Adam Scott for the best score of the final round.

McIlroy set up three birdies with his short game. He made three more over a five-hole section around the turn by making big putts, and he closed out his first US PGA Tour victory of the year with a fearless 3-wood into the wind and over the hazard that landed harmless in the right bunker for a simple up-and-down.

The third answer was his putter, and still to be determined is how long this fix will last.

Good form doesn’t last forever. Good putting can have an even shorter shelf life.

Even so, his struggles with the putter are a big reason McIlroy plunged from No. 1 in the world nearly one year ago to No. 5, removing him from the recent “Big 3” conversation, and at times making him an afterthought.

He putted so poorly at the US PGA Championship, where he missed the cut last month, that he sought help. It took him to Phil Kenyon, a British putting guru who works with Henrik Stenson and Louis Oosthuizen, and who was working with Justin Rose a month before Rose won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.

He also changed away from the Nike putter to a Scotty Cameron mallet last week, and while he was towards the bottom of the pack at the Barclays, he was among the top putters at the TPC Boston.

McIlroy likes Kenyon because he doesn’t teach a specific technique, only principles that each player can adapt as he sees fit. McIlroy made one tweak all on his own, moving his right hand more on top of the grip to make sure the face of the putter didn’t open.

This was not about relief of winning for the first time since the Irish Open in May, or for the first time on the tour since the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2015. He was excited about where he was headed. He went up to No. 3 in the world.

His colleagues sounded a little less excited.

“A few putts go your way, get a little bit of confidence, start rolling them in, start feeling good about yourself. Over the last few days, he’s obviously playing pretty well. And if he gets hot on the greens...,” Jason Day said, not needing to finish the sentence.

Adam Scott knows what it’s like to be scrutinised for putting, and he referred to McIlroy as “Teflon coated” because he doesn’t let the criticism stick.

“He just waits... and he kept doing his thing,” Scott said. “And this week he’s found some magic in his fingers or something and he’s holing everything. It’s a very nice way to be. I hope he can keep doing that his whole career.”

Stroll emerges as a Williams contender

By - Sep 06,2016 - Last updated at Sep 06,2016

MONZA, Italy — Canadian teenager Lance Stroll has emerged as a front runner to replace Felipe Massa at the Williams Formula One team next season after the Brazilian announced his retirement last week.

Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion who was the last Canadian to race for the British-based team, told Reuters at Monza that he believed the deal was all but done for the 17-year old.

A team source confirmed separately that Stroll was on the short list, along with Brazilian Felipe Nasr, who was a Williams reserve before securing his current race seat at Sauber.

Stroll turns 18 in October and is on course to win the European F3 title, which would secure him the necessary super licence.

His career has been bankrolled by billionaire father Lawrence, who made his fortune with the Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors fashion brands.

Williams signed the youngster last year as a development driver with a promise he would be “fully immersed” in the team in the same way that current race driver Valtteri Bottas was.

Mexican Sergio “Checo” Perez has also been in the rumour mill but Force India, who are battling Williams for fourth place, have him under contract.

“We’re just going through the process now, which is very close, to finalising the commercial side and then hopefully there will be an announcement in the near future,” deputy principal Bob Fernley told Reuters.

“At the moment, his alternatives are either sideways or backwards.”

Perez told reporters he hoped for an announcement within weeks and was confident he would get “what I always wanted”.

When asked what that might be, he replied “You will find out very soon”.

Some interpreted that as a hint that he could move to Renault, with that works team rebuilding, but it could equally refer to release clauses.

Ferrari have Kimi Raikkonen, the 2007 champion and oldest driver on the starting grid at 36, out of contract at the end of 2017 and Perez started out as a member of the Ferrari young driver academy.

The Mexican, who had one unhappy season at McLaren, has made no secret of his desire to drive for a top team again and being locked into a multi-year contract would make that harder.

The fate of Denmark’s Kevin Magnussen and British rookie Jolyon Palmer at Renault remains uncertain, with the latter yet to score a point in 14 races.

Russian Daniil Kvyat is also looking insecure at Toro Rosso, with French GP2 leader Pierre Gasly eager for a chance.
