Defiant Messi gives troubled Barca hope

By - Feb 24,2020 - Last updated at Feb 24,2020

MADRID — Lionel Messi has said Barcelona are not playing well enough to win this season’s Champions League but his four goals against Eibar on Saturday were a reminder that with him there will always be hope.

Barca play Napoli in the first leg of the last 16 on Tuesday and will be expected to go through, even if their opponents are on a strong run, having won six out of their last seven matches, including victories over Juventus and Inter Milan.

Yet, despite a whirlwind couple of months of political wrangling, remarkably Barcelona approach this tie sitting top of La Liga and with a spring in their step, in large part due to Messi.

His quadruple in the 5-0 rout at Camp Nou on Saturday was cathartic and not only because Real Madrid, whom Barca face in the Clasico on Sunday, failed to regain first place after losing to Levante a few hours later.

“It was a win we needed,” said coach Quique Setien.

Messi has scored seven quadruples in his career but none executed amid such an intense time of pressure, with the spotlight on the Argentine.

While other players might have sulked or crumbled, Messi delivered with another breathtaking performance that underlined his ability to drag this troubled team through even the most turbulent of periods.

“He’s been in this form for 14 or 15 years and he keeps performing like this,” said Setien.

“He’s a guarantee for any club and for any coach and that’s what makes him the best player in the world. He can do things that others can only dream about.”

Messi could have had many reasons to feel upset but he hasn’t let them affect his performances.

Barcelona’s board sacked Ernesto Valverde last month, despite Messi’s public backing three days before, and failed to sign a striker in the transfer window with Luis Suarez and Ousamane Dembele both out injured.

The club’s technical secretary Eric Abidal then said the squad were the main reason for Valverde’s departure while the president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has been accused of hiring a PR company that criticised key players, including Messi, in a bid to improve his image online.

Barcelona have denied the allegations, but when asked in an interview with Mundo Deportivo last week if he was convinced, Messi said he would wait to see if they were true.

He also admitted, “the way we are at the moment, I don’t think it’s enough to win the Champions League” and identified Real Madrid, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool as greater threats.

Yet, if Messi were to win the Champions League this season, it would surely represent one of his most impressive achievements.

With the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Arthur Melo in midfield and the excellent Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal, they do not lack for talent but weaknesses in defence remain, not to mention a fragility against the counter-attack.

And by appointing Setien, a coach devoted to a very particular style, Barcelona are having to change mid-season, with Setien admitting this month that it would take time for the players to understand his methods.

“It’s not easy,” said Messi. “We come from playing under Valverde to playing differently now and being asked to do something else. The truth is we are learning and we still have a lot to learn.”

But with in-form Napoli fast-approaching and then Madrid to come at the Santiago Bernabeu, time is not on Barcelona’s side. For now, they will look to Messi.

Barca jump above defeated Madrid before Clasico

MADRID — Lionel Messi scored four goals and Barcelona reclaimed top spot in La Liga as Real Madrid suffered a surprise defeat by Levante on Saturday, a week before the Clasico.

Madrid’s nightmare afternoon was made worse by another injury to Eden Hazard, who was forced off in the second half of their 1-0 defeat in Valencia and is now doubtful to face Manchester City on Wednesday in the Champions League.

“It doesn’t look good,” said Real coach Zinedine Zidane afterwards.

Messi, meanwhile, ridiculed talk of a drought by scoring four goals against Eibar after four games without one, while emergency signing Martin Braithwaite made two assists off the bench, teeing up Messi and then Arthur Melo in injury-time.

Their 5-0 rout, coupled with Madrid’s defeat, means Barca move back to the summit of La Liga, two points ahead of Zidane’s side ahead of next Saturday’s showdown at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“We’ve had good times this season and now this is a bad time,” said Zidane. “Now we have a week where everything is at stake.”

It amounts to a considerable shift in momentum, with Barcelona away at Napoli in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

Madrid host City a day later and the plan had been for Hazard to regain form and fitness in what was only his second start since returning from three months out with a broken right foot.

But the Belgian sat in the dug-out with an ice pack around the same foot after going off and Zidane suggested it was a repeat injury after the match.

“It can be weak where you’ve had an injury,” he said. “It’s sore now but we will see tomorrow after more tests.”

Madrid were shaken by Hazard’s departure and Levante capitalised as Jose Luis Morales banged a shot into the top corner from the angle, even if Thibaut Courtois pulled out of a save he should have made.

For Madrid, playing catch-up again next weekend will be a particularly heavy psychological blow, especially given the series of off-field problems engulfing Barcelona in recent weeks.

Yet, on the pitch, Messi showed no sign of distraction as the 32-year-old completed the second fastest of his now 36 league hat-tricks, after less than 40 minutes at Camp Nou.

“There’s nothing left to do but stand up and applaud,” Eibar wrote on Twitter afterwards. “I won’t wash my kit after hugging Messi,” said Braithwaite.

Braithwaite’s arrival from Leganes drew criticism after Barcelona capitalised on a curious La Liga rule that allows clubs to sign outside of the transfer window if they have lost a player to serious injury.

Leganes, without their top scorer, were beaten earlier by fellow strugglers Celta Vigo, but Braithwaite made the perfect start with his new team.

Brilliant Messi

Messi quickly got to work, scoring a brilliant first goal in the 14th minute after collecting the ball centrally, around 30 yards out. He had three Eibar defenders in front of him but found a way through, nutmegging Anaitz Arbilla before chipping delicately into the corner.

The second came in the 37th minute as Sergio Busquets found Arturo Vidal, who feathered a flick into Messi’s path. Messi surged forward, past his stumbling opponents, and fired in.

His third, three minutes later, was the simplest of the trio and arrived only after he tried to play in Antoine Griezmann. His generosity was rewarded as a sloppy Griezmann touch meant the ball cannoned back to Messi, who apologetically poked in.

Coach Quique Setien was able to take Griezmann off with 18 minutes left and introduce Braithwaite for his debut. Braithwaite’s first contribution was a skewed cross but things improved immeasurably from there, as two passes across goal gave Messi his fourth and Arthur his first.

Madrid were never in control of a chaotic contest against Levante but might have taken the lead if Hazard had done better with a long ball over the top from Marcelo, which he failed to control and then scuffed into the hands of Aitor Fernandez.

He limped off and Madrid lost their way, finally punished with 11 minutes left by a straight ball through to Morales. Luka Modric, exposed on the right side of Madrid’s defence, was unable to recover and Morales caught Courtois by surprise by firing early past the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Real Sociedad moved into fourth and above Atletico Madrid with a 3-0 victory over Valencia, whose miserable form continued following their 4-1 Champions League loss at Atalanta in midweek.

Faisali play in Beirut, Jazira host Riffa’ in AFC Cup

By - Feb 23,2020 - Last updated at Feb 23,2020

AMMAN — Both Jordanian teams are aiming for wins in the next round of matches in the 17th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup — the second-tier Asian club competition.

Jordan’s Faisali play Lebanon’s Ansar in Beirut. The Jordanian champs are second in Group B after holding Syria’s Wathba 0-0 in their first match, while Ansar are last after they lost 1-0 to Kuwait FC.

On the other hand, Jazira host Bahrain’s Riffa’ SC in Amman. The Jordanian team, who seem to be going through rough times financially and hoping to consolidate their line-up ahead of the current season, are now last in the Group C after they lost 1-0 to Oman’s Dhofar in their first match. Riffa’ are third in the group after they lost 2-1 to Kuwait’s Qaddissieh.

Twelve West Asian teams are playing in three groups with the top team from the each group in addition to the best second placed team advancing to the semifinal round of the zone and the winner advancing to the eventual competition final against the East Asia champ.

After an impressive local season, Jazira were close to winning the 2018/19 AFC Cup title last year, but they failed to make it to the competition final after they lost the West Asia zone final to Lebanon’s Ahed who eventually won the title. Wihdat were eliminated in the semis of the West Asia zone.

It’s been 13 years since Jordanian teams won the AFC Cup. Faisali won in 2005 and 2006 and Shabab Urdun won in 2007. Other Jordanian teams participating in previous editions include Ramtha, Hussein, That Ras and Ahli. Kuwait Club and the Iraqi Air Force Club are AFC Cup record winners having been crowned champs three times each.

Earlier this year, the continents’ leading competition — the AFC Champions League — saw Faisali eliminated by Kuwait Club in the preliminary round. Jordanian teams have never before made it past the ACL preliminary round. In the 2018 and 2019 editions, Faisali were knocked out, while Wihdat were knocked out in 2017, 2016 and 2015. Shabab Urdun were eliminated in 2014.

In Arab competitions, Shabab Urdun reached the Round of 16 of the Arab Club Champions Cup but were eliminated although they had ousted titleholders Tunisia’s Etoile Sportive Du Sahel in the preliminary round.

As the local season kicked off, the Jordan Football Association Shield saw Wihdat beat Ramtha to win the title. Last season, Faisali were crowned Jordan Professional Football League champs and combined it with their 20th Jordan Cup title. Jazira were second and Wihdat third in the league. Wihdat beat Jazira to win the 36th Jordan Super Cup.

Sponsors in the ring for Olympic boxing qualifiers in Amman

By - Feb 23,2020 - Last updated at Feb 23,2020

AMMAN — Local and international sponsors have stepped into the ring to support Jordan’s hosting of the Asian/Oceanian Tokyo 2020 Boxing Qualifying Event, which will be held in Amman from March 3-11, according to the Jordan Olympic Committee News Service.

Jordan agreed to host the prestigious tournament following the decision to move it from Coronavirus-hit Wuhan in China, and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has been boosted by the support of Societe Generale De Banque Jordan, Zain, Buffalo Wings and Rings, Taishan and Aramex, as well as Coca-Cola, one of the official top partners for the International Olympic Committee.

Work continues around the clock to prepare a world-class venue in the capital’s Prince Hamzah Hall at Al Hussein Youth City.

The event is expected to attract the best boxers from 54 countries who are vying to pick up one of the 41 men’s qualifying spots available from eight weight divisions and 22 female places from five weights for this summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The LOC’s efforts have been recognised by a number of companies who have also thrown their weight behind the event in a bid to make it an unprecedented success.

“We have been short on time but huge on effort to ensure that this event meets the extremely high standards of the Olympic family,” said Nasser Majali, secretary general of the Jordan Olympic Committee and chairman of the LOC. “We are pleased with our progress and look forward to welcoming our friends from two continents to Amman over the coming days. “The support that we have received from the business community has been particularly heartening and provides us with the helping hand required to produce a world-class event.”

Khalelieh clinches season opening Jordan 4x4 Championship win

By - Feb 23,2020 - Last updated at Feb 23,2020

AMMAN — Jordan Motorsport launched their 2020 season in style with an action-packed opening round of the Jordan 4x4 Championship on Friday, according to the Jordan Motorsport Media Service.

Featuring a solid field of 40 competitors and sponsored by BF Goodrich, it was Palestinian, Wisam Khalelieh, who completed the specially-created track overlooking the Dead Sea in the fastest time during the all-important final round.

With Hamzah Abu Shamma at his side, Khalelieh clinched the maximum points in a time of three minutes and five seconds, 21 seconds clear of Jordan’s Maen Al Nahar in second.

Another Palestinian driver, Emad Abu Dabbour, who recorded the fastest circuit in the heats, finished third in a time of 3:40.00, considerably slower than his pace setting best time of 2:48.00 earlier in the day.  Jordanians Haitham Al Abbadi and Yihya Sobar came home in fourth and fifth respectively.

All 40 crews took on the challenging course once, before the fastest 15 were invited back for the final round to determine the winner.  This is the first of three rounds for the championship, with the next scheduled to take place on September 4.  Next up is the opening round of the National Rally Championship on March 6.

PSG seek to rouse themselves against Bordeaux

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain go into Sunday’s home game with Bordeaux with a comfortable 10-point lead in Ligue 1, but life has been anything but comfortable for the French champions over the last week.

Club President Nasser Al Khelaifi was indicted on Thursday in a Swiss corruption investigation, which does not directly involve PSG but is, however it turns out, a distraction.

Meanwhile, the future commitment of the club’s star striker is again in doubt, after Lionel Messi said in an interview published in Spain on Thursday that Neymar “really wants to return to Barcelona”.

On the field, PSG threw away points in their last league match with a bizarre 4-4 draw at Amiens last Saturday. PSG fell behind 3-0, fought back with four goals in 29 minutes and then conceded an equaliser in added time.

Perhaps that distracted display could be excused because the club was facing a much more meaningful test on Tuesday away to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. It is a competition the squad has been built to win, but they have lost in the first knockout round the last three seasons.

“This is not life or death, it’s a game of football,” sporting director Leonardo said before the match.

Yet, the reactions after PSG lost, 2-1, their first defeat in any competition since losing in the league at Dijon on November 1, suggested not everyone agreed with Leonardo.

Coach Thomas Tuchel rested Neymar for the two Ligue 1 outings in the run-up to Tuesday and, while he scored in Dortmund, the Brazilian complained after the game.

“I understand the club’s fear, because I missed the last 16 in each of the last two years,” he said. “I respect the decisions, but it can’t be that way, because it is the player who ends up suffering.”

“It was very difficult to play a game of that intensity,” he added. “If I were in a better condition physically then I definitely would have played better.”

Neymar seemed to have discovered his intensity and rhythm by Thursday night. Videos showed him dancing topless at a party to celebrate the birthdays of teammates d’Angel Di Maria, Mauro Icardi and Edinson Cavani.

Dortmund do not visit Paris until March 11. Next Wednesday PSG face old enemies Lyon in a French Cup semifinal.

Bordeaux are unbeaten in their last five games, but three of those were draws and they are trudging along in mid-table. The question is whether they present enough of a challenge to force PSG to rediscover their intensity or will they give another distracted display?

Player to watch:

Max-Alain Gradel

Toulouse need a miracle. Their captain is their best hope, and he knows it.

Toulouse are eight points adrift of Amiens and 13 points away from 18th and potential safety as they travel to fourth-place Lille on Saturday evening.

The 32-year-old Ivorian came off the bench after two months out with 25 minutes left and Toulouse down a goal and a man against Nice. The hosts had a second man sent off, but Gradel still won a 90th minute penalty, which Aaron Leya Iseka missed and Nice added a second goal.

“If I didn’t really believe in the game, I wouldn’t have taken the risk of coming back so quickly,” said Gradel, whose four goals this season make him joint-leading scorer at the club.

“If we saves ourselves, it will be all of us together,” he said. “Nobody believes in us, but we have to take it as a challenge, and for me it’s this kind of battle that motivates me.”

“I’m a leader, I’m the captain and I’m going to do everything I can to be decisive.”

He needs to start at Lille, the last team Toulouse beat, way back on October 19.

Romanian boxer inspires girls to knock out poverty

BUZAU, Romania — Steluta Duta was a teenaged orphan living on the streets when, one cold January day in 2002, she stepped through the door of a boxing gym in the town of Buzau and embarked on her unlikely path to becoming an elite athlete.

Duta, whose first name means “little star”, has fought for almost two decades in the ring, with every punch thrown bringing her closer to what she calls “a normal life, away from misery” and becoming an inspiration for others like her.

Romania is one of the poorest in the European Union, with 38 per cent of children at risk of social exclusion and poverty, according to Eurostat.

Becoming a boxer “was my only chance, my gamble”, Duta, a short woman with cropped hair dyed blond, tells AFP during a break from her training at the gym in Buzau, a town in south-eastern Romania.

At 38, Duta is a three-time silver medallist at the sport’s World Championships and a three-time gold medal-winner at the European Championships in the light flyweight category.

“If it wasn’t for that day she entered the gym, she would now be another one of those living under a bridge and sniffing glue,” says a tearful Constantin Voicilas, 69, who has been Duta’s coach and mentor throughout her career and has been training promising boxers for more than four decades.

When Duta left her orphanage aged 17, she initially became homeless and even thought about suicide.

“Back then I lied to [Voicilas] and said I had a place to sleep so he would let me box,” Duta recalls.

When Voicilas learned the truth he converted part of the gym into a bedroom to make sure she had somewhere to sleep.

Sport as a lifeline

Duta overcame formidable odds to build a successful career in Romania.

A Save the Children report released in late 2019 cited a host of threats to child welfare, particularly in rural areas: high education dropout rates, limited access to healthcare and a prevalence of physical and emotional abuse as a form of discipline.

Duta is now helping the next generation to fight those obstacles in the ring.

At the Buzau boxing gym, she often spars with Bianca Lacatusu, a shy teenager 20 years her junior.

Lacatusu also had a tough childhood.

Her parents died when she was seven months old, when she was placed with a foster family who later handed her over to an orphanage.

“I like to fight... I don’t know how the Master found me, but I’m glad he did,” Bianca tells AFP, using Voicilas’s nickname.

Lacatusu says that Duta has been an inspiration to her — and that she dreams of one day defeating her in the ring.

Adrian Lacatus, the national boxing team coach who has worked closely with Duta, says that girls from tough backgrounds often display this will to succeed.

“Children from poor families are used to difficulties, they don’t throw in the towel at the first hurdle,” he says.

He says with confidence that among the girls he is currently coaching in Bucharest, “many will write history”.

‘No grudge’

One of them is already well on her way.

Alexandra Gheorghe’s delicate features belie her hardscrabble childhood.

But at 17 she has already won a silver medal at the European Championships and is now training with Lacatus for future competitions.

For her part, Duta is preparing for two national competitions later this year and is determined to fight on for two more years until the age of 40.

After that, she wants to focus on coaching and her personal life.

“I want to be healthy and to have a family. To be a good mother, first of all,” she says.

“Without parental love, it’s all in vain.”

Amateur boxing is not lucrative, so Duta’s finances have not matched her success in the ring.

The champion still pays rent for a two-room apartment in Buzau that she hopes to buy someday.

When asked if she feels that the Romanian state supports her, Duta points towards her coach, joking: “You’re my state!”

“Yes, the Republic of Voicilas”, he replies.

But Duta has used her meagre savings to renovate the house where her biological mother lives with two of her younger siblings — despite the fact she gave Duta up right after she was born.

“I hold no grudge,” Duta says.

Ramtha take on Wihdat in JFA Shield final

By - Feb 20,2020 - Last updated at Feb 20,2020

AMMAN  — Ramtha will take on Wihdat on Friday in the final of the 33rd Jordan Football Association Shield — the first of the 2020 football season competitions.

Wihdat will be aiming for their record 10th Shield title, while Ramtha, who have not won a major competition recently, are five time Shield champs, with the last one in 2001.

Wihdat manager Ziyad Shilbayeh underlined his team’s readiness to be back at forefront of the competitions after they conceded the Jordan Professional Football League to Faisali last year. “We are ready, and the team is in the best form possible. Wihdat will be back to win titles this season,” he was quoted as saying.

Coach Abdullah Abu Zameh told the press after training. “I have the highest respect for Ramtha’s coach [Issa Turk] and his team., and I hope fans will enjoy a competitive match,” he said.

“My squad is ready and we hope the Shield will be the first of our titles this season,” he added.

Wihdat reached the final after they beat Shabab Urdun 2-1, while Ramtha ousted Sarih 2-1 in the semifinal.

Ramtha manager Abdulla Awakeh underlined that his team was aiming to get back into winning competitions and was ready for the match. Ramtha last won the Jordan Cup in 1990-1991 and the Shield in 2001.

Twelve league teams played the first round in three groups with the top team in each group and the best overall second placed team advancing to the semifinal. Sarih topped group A, Ramtha topped Group B, and Shabab Urdun topped group C while Wihdat advanced as best second place team. Leading teams eliminated in the group rounds included league reigning champs Faisali who lost to Sarih, as well as Jazira who lost to Shabab Urdun.

As the season gets into full swing, the Super Cup will next see league and Jordan Cup champs Faisali play Cup runner-up Jazira on February 28.

Last season, Faisali were crowned league champs and combined it with their 20th Jordan Cup title. Jazira were second and Wihdat third in the league. Wihdat beat Jazira to win the 36th Jordan Super Cup.

Wihdat were the last winners of the Shield competition in the 2017/2018 season. The competition was not held last year.

Looking back at the history of the Shield tournament, Wihdat are a record nine time winners, Faisali seven, Ramtha five, Hussein three, Jazira, Amman and Shabab Urdun twice each, and Kufrsoum and Yarmouk once each. Hussein were finalists seven times. Amman, have since scrapped football while Qadissieh were relegated and have since merged with Shabab Urdun.

PSG still ‘dangerous’, warns record-breaker Haaland

DORTMUND, Germany — Teenage record-breaker Erling Braut Haaland warned Borussia Dortmund still have it all to do to reach the Champions League quarter-finals even after his two goals sank Neymar’s Paris Saint-Germain.

Haaland netted either side of a Neymar equaliser on Tuesday as the Brazilian superstar scored on his return from injury as the French champions crashed to a 2-1 defeat at Dortmund in the last 16, first leg, tie.

“We want to go through, it’s going to be a hard game,” Haaland said of the return leg in Paris on March 11, “but we are a good team.

“The result is quite a dangerous one, as Paris has a very strong team and can still go through in the return leg.”

Haaland’s teammate Emre Can, who alongside Axel Witsel worked tirelessly in Dortmund’s midfield to contain Neymar and France striker Kylian Mbappe, said the home side’s defence had been key.

“It was a big statement from the team how we defended today. We know it’s not over — it’s just half-time,” said Can, whose permanent transfer from Juventus was confirmed Tuesday.

However, the night belonged Haaland who has 11 goals in his first seven games for Dortmund and warned there is more to come.

“I feel like I still can do a lot better,” said Haaland.

“I have to work hard to improve to play better at this level.”

Having also scored eight goals for Salzburg in the group stages before his 20 million-euro ($22 million) transfer to Dortmund, Haaland made Champions League history on Tuesday.

His tally of 10 goals in his first seven Champions League matches is now a new record in the competition and makes him the joint top-scorer alongside Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

The teenage goal-machine has so far scored 39 times in 29 games this season for Salzburg and Dortmund.

The 19-year-old had already sent records tumbling since arriving in Dortmund last month when he became the first player to score a hat-trick off the bench on his Bundesliga debut.

His incredible strike for his second goal on Tuesday overshadowed Neymar’s return from a rib injury with PSG desperate to break their last 16 jinx having exited at this stage in the competition in each of the last three seasons.

‘Important

Neymar goal’

Paris defender Marquinhos said Neymar’s away goal could prove crucial in the home leg.

“We weren’t intense enough with or without the ball and did a lot of things badly, however, the goal we got is important for the second leg,” he said.

The presence of the world’s most expensive player was a major boost for his team, after Neymar missed last season’s surprise last-16 loss to Manchester United with a foot injury.

He also sat out the second leg of their defeat by Real Madrid at the same stage in 2018.

PSG’s German coach Thomas Tuchel admitted Neymar’s lack of match fitness had been a factor in the away defeat, but said his team still has time to find their form.

“Neymar hadn’t played for a fortnight, but he is very important for Kylian [Mbappe], there is harmony between them and if Neymar lacks rhythm, it’s immediately noticeable,” said Tuchel.

“We didn’t have enough possession, we made too many easy mistakes, we weren’t smart enough and we lost the ball too early.

“It’s difficult, but it’s 2-1 and we still have a few games left to get back into the rhythm.”

His counterpart Lucien Favre echoed Haaland’s insistence that the result gives Dortmund only a slender advantage with PSG’s passionate home fans set to get behind their team in the return leg.

“Of course it’s a dangerous result, but we played well in both defence and attack,” said Dortmund’s Swiss coach.

“However, as things stand it’s 2-1 to us.”
