Real Madrid, Atletico into Champions League last 16 as PSG win suspended game

PARIS — Karim Benzema sent Real Madrid through to the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday alongside their rivals Atletico, while Neymar scored a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain beat Istanbul Basaksehir in a match that had been delayed for 24 hours over a racism row.

Real are Europe’s most decorated club with 13 European Cups but they needed to beat Borussia Moenchengladbach in Madrid to be sure of making it through the group stage of the Champions League for a 24th straight year.

Benzema was their hero, easing the pressure on coach Zinedine Zidane with two fine back-post headers in the first half securing a 2-0 win in a game played behind closed doors at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium.

“Each match is a final and I think that if we always play how we did today, no team can hurt us,” warned Benzema, who has played in four Champions League final wins with Real in the last seven seasons.

The Frenchman also hit the bar in the second half and in the end it was a result that suited both teams, with a 0-0 draw between Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk allowing Real to top Group B and Gladbach, former European Cup runners-up, to go through as runners-up.

Players from the German club gathered around smartphones and laptops after full time in Madrid to follow events in Milan, where a winner for either team would have knocked Gladbach out.

They celebrated wildly when their qualification was confirmed.

“Moments like that live long in the memory. It was absolutely incredible and the joy was uncontainable,” said Gladbach midfielder Christoph Kramer.

Inter fail again

Shakhtar go into the Europa League while Inter finish bottom of their group, failing to reach the last 16 for a third season running.

Meanwhile Atletico needed to beat Red Bull Salzburg in Austria to qualify as runners-up in Group A behind Bayern Munich, and did so with Mario Hermoso and Yannick Carrasco scoring in a 2-0 victory.

“I think in the nine years we’ve been here, we have reached the last 16 eight times,” said Atletico coach Diego Simeone.

“I enjoy looking back at that. Lots of people will say it’s just normal for us but I don’t think it’s normal.”

Salzburg now go into the Europa League while reigning European champions Bayern completed the group stage unbeaten as Niklas Suele and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave them a 2-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow.

Atalanta through

The other team to clinch qualification on Wednesday was Atalanta, whose 1-0 win away to Ajax secured second place in Group D behind Liverpool and a last-16 spot for the second year running.

Luis Muriel scored a late winner for Atalanta in Amsterdam after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for the hosts, who drop into the Europa League.

Already through, Liverpool were able to give a chance to several younger players in their 1-1 draw with Midtjylland in Denmark, where Mohamed Salah put the 2019 winners ahead early on but Alexander Scholz’s penalty gave the hosts an honourable draw.

Neymar hat-trick

PSG had wrapped up their qualification for the last 16 on Tuesday thanks to Manchester United’s defeat at RB Leipzig, despite their own game being suspended after an unprecedented walkout.

Both sets of players refused to continue after a row erupted over an alleged racist remark by the fourth official aimed at Basaksehir’s assistant coach, Pierre Webo.

With a new set of officials, the game restarted in the 14th minute on Wednesday and an irresistible Neymar scored a hat-trick while also winning a penalty converted by Kylian Mbappe.

That was Mbappe’s first Champions League goal in 12 months, and he scored again later on after Mehmet Topal pulled one back. With their 5-1 victory, PSG go through as group winners.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City made it five wins and a draw in Group D as they eased to a 3-0 victory against Marseille with Ferran Torres and Sergio Aguero getting second-half goals before an Alvaro Gonzalez own goal.

Also already qualified, Porto beat Olympiakos 2-0 in Piraeus courtesy of Otavio’s early penalty and a Matheus Uribe goal. The Greeks, who ended with 10 men, finish third in the section.

The draw for the last 16 is on Monday.

Man Utd exit Champions League as racism row interrupts PSG game

PARIS — Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League after a 3-2 defeat by RB Leipzig on Tuesday, while Paris Saint-Germain's qualification for the last 16 was overshadowed by a racism row involving a match official that caused their game against Istanbul Basaksehir to be suspended for 24 hours.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties as Juventus blew away Lionel Messi's struggling Barcelona 3-0 to wrest first place in Group G away from the Spanish giants.

Lazio also secured a spot in the knockout rounds for the first time in two decades following a tense 2-2 draw at home to Club Brugge in the pouring rain in Rome.

Requiring just a point to advance, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side fell behind to an Angelino goal inside two minutes in Germany. Amadou Haidara soon added a second and United and were trailing 3-0 heading into the final quarter after a Justin Kluivert strike.

Bruno Fernandes's penalty and a deflected Paul Pogba header gave United a lifeline but Leipzig, who reached the semifinals last term, held on to move top of Group H on 12 points.

"We started too late. We showed great spirit to come back again, but you can't give a team a 3-0 lead and expect to come back," said Solskjaer.

Leipzig must wait until Wednesday to find out whether they finish first or second in the section, after the contest between last season's runners-up PSG and Turkish champions Basaksehir was interrupted with the score 0-0 in the 14th minute.

Players walked off in Paris amid allegations of racism by the fourth official, in an unprecedented incident in European football's elite club competition.

The row erupted after Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo, the former Cameroon international, was shown a red card during a fierce row on the touchline with staff from the Turkish club appearing to accuse the official of using a racist term.

Television microphones picked up a furious Webo repeatedly asking why a racist term had been used to describe him.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he "strongly" condemned the incident, while UEFA announced it would open a "thorough investigation".

In a statement, UEFA confirmed the game would, "on an exceptional basis", restart from where it was stopped on Wednesday at 17:55 GMT, "with a new team of match officials".

PSG, who advanced following United's loss, will claim top spot with victory.

Moukoko enters

record books

Andrea Pirlo's Juventus avenged a 2-0 home loss to Barcelona in October when Ronaldo was sidelined with COVID-19, edging their opponents on head-to-head record and heaping more pressure on Ronald Koeman.

"We're very happy. We knew it was almost mission impossible [to come top]," Ronaldo told Movistar. "It was a difficult task but we played well. The key was to start the match well and from there we saw it was possible."

Weston McKennie scored in between Ronaldo's two spot-kicks at the Camp Nou as Barca, off to their worst La Liga start in 33 years, were denied a sixth win from six in Europe.

"Frankly, I was surprised at how we started, as if we weren't really hungry to win the match," said Koeman.

Denys Popov's header earned Dynamo Kiev a 1-0 victory over their former star Serhiy Rebrov and Ferencvaros in the group's other game, offering them a place in the Europa League.

Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko, aged 16 years and 18 days, became the youngest player in Champions League history as he came off the bench in a 2-1 victory away to Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Cameroon-born Moukoko, who made his European debut as a 58th-minute substitute in Russia, broke the previous record of Celestine Babayaro, who was 16 years and 87 days when he played for Anderlecht in November 1994.

Dortmund, who had already qualified for the last 16, equalised within minutes of Moukoko's introduction, with Lukasz Piszczek cancelling out Sebastian Driussi's first-half goal before Axel Witsel scored the winner.

Jorginho spared Chelsea's blushes as his penalty rescued a 1-1 draw against Krasnodar in Group E following Remy Cabella's opener in London.

Frank Lampard's side were already assured of finishing top, while goals from Jules Kounde and two Youssef En-Nesyri eased Sevilla to a 3-1 victory at Rennes.

Pro League standings clearer as competition winds down

By - Dec 09,2020 - Last updated at Dec 09,2020

AMMAN   —  While Wihdat are in the lead and holders Faisali seem destined to forego their title, the runner-up and positions 3-5 are still undecided as leading teams scramble for advanced positions while others struggle at the bottom end of Jordan Professional League.

Week 16 kicks off on Thursday with Wihdat coming head-to-head with ambitious Ramtha. Wihdat last beat Aqaba 1-0 while Ramtha edged Ma'an 2-1 to maintain the third spot.

Jazira who beat Sarih 2-1 next play Faisali who dropped to fifth, while Hussein who beat Ahli 1-0 next play Salt.

Shabab Urdun, who have improved to 6th after they beat Salt 4-2, next play Ma'an, while Sarih play Aqaba who are now 11th. Ahli, who lost to Hussein, seem unable to move from last spot and next play 10th placed Sahab.

The league champ will move on to the preliminary round of the Asian Champions League while the second and third teams, instead of the Jordan Cup champ,  play in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup after the Jordan Cup was scrapped from the agenda.

So far this season,  Faisali beat Jazira to win their 17th and 37th Jordan Super Cup while Wihdat defeated Ramtha to win their 1oth and the 33rd Jordan Football Association Shield.  Regionally, reigning champs Faisali  had an unimpressive start in the AFC Cup, while 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup national team qualifiers have now been postponed to next year.

Last season, Wihdat beat Jazira to win the 36th Jordan Super Cup while Faisali won their 20th Jordan Cup title, adding it to their record 34th Pro League title, one point ahead of Jazira who had led throughout the competition and settled for runner-up. Ahli, who were relegated last decade but came back to win the Jordan Cup in 2015 and played in the AFC,  barely secured their spot as Baqa'a dropped to the First Division after 18 consecutive seasons in the Pro League. They were joined by That Ras, a former AFC Cup participant and 2012 Jordan Cup champ. Ma'an and Sarih were promoted.

Since the league kicked off in 1944 with only Faisali, Urdun, Ahli and Homenetmen competing, Faisali are 34 time record league winners while Wihdat were crowned champs for 16 times since they joined in 1980.

Brazil world champions... of firing coaches

By - Dec 08,2020 - Last updated at Dec 08,2020

SAO PAULO — The coronavirus pandemic has swollen the unemployment rolls to record levels in Brazil, but take a moment to pity another kind of jobless worker: football coaches in the Brazilian top flight routinely fired for as few as four bad results

Brazilian clubs are the world champions of sacking coaches, and the turnover has been high this year: 23 rounds into the season, no less than 22 coaches have already got the boot.

It is not just teams at the bottom of the table playing musical chairs with the coach’s seat in the dugout.

Three weeks ago, reigning Brazilian and South American champions Flamengo fired coach Domenec Torrent, Pep Guardiola’s longtime assistant, after barely three months in charge.

The Spaniard was sacked even though Flamengo were in third place, just one point off the top.

He was replaced by Rogero Ceni, under whom the Rio de Janeiro giants this week saw their defence of the Copa Libertadores end in a defeat on penalties by Argentine side Racing.

Of the 20 Serie A clubs, only five have not changed coaches yet this season.

A recent study found Brazil is the country where top-flight coaches are fired the most.

Directed by the German Sport University Cologne, the study examined the firing of coaches in the Brazilian league from 2003 to 2018.

The authors found an average 37.1 coaches were fired each season in Brazil, versus 21 in Argentina, 10 in England and 4.9 in France.

Culture change

Four consecutive bad results is often all it takes, the study found. Or getting eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, which increases a coach’s chance of being shown the exit by up to 560 per cent.

“The fact that teams are analysing performance on a time horizon of just four matches to decide whether to keep their coach shows how much management’s thinking at Brazilian clubs is dominated by short-term logic,” the study says.

Among the big clubs, Flamengo lead the list, with an average of 1.9 coaches per season, followed by Sao Paulo and Palmeiras at 1.6.

Coaches’ jobs are all the more difficult, given that clubs are often equally quick to sell their best players to Europe — Flamengo have not been the same since Spanish defender Pablo Mari left for Arsenal in January.

“We need to change our culture. Club presidents need to know why they hire and fire their coaches,” Paulo Vinicius Coelho, a commentator for Brazilian network SporTV, told AFP.

The Brazilian national team has lately been an exception to the revolving-door trend. Coach Tite has held the job since 2016, and renewed his contract until 2022 after the last World Cup, even though Brazil was sent packing in the quarter-finals.

But he may be the exception that proves the rule: he is the first coach of the Selecao to keep his job after a World Cup — whether won or lost by the five-time world champions — since Claudio Coutinho in 1978.

His assistant, Cleber Xavier, recently said the high turnover rate for coaches was “one of the biggest problems” in Brazilian football.

Round trips

The average coach in the “Brasileirao” stays just 65 days at the same club.

Sacked coaches do not necessarily stay unemployed for long, however.

Around 10 coaches on average coach two different teams in a single year.

Ceni is a case in point. The former Sao Paulo player — a free kick and penalty specialist who holds the world record for goals scored by a goalkeeper, with 132 — began his coaching career in 2017 at his longtime club.

But he lasted just six months and 37 matches.

He landed at Fortaleza and helped them reach the first division, then left for Cruzeiro. Three months later, he got the sack, and was happy when Fortaleza welcomed him back.

That did not stop him from quitting Fortaleza again last month to take the reins at Flamengo.

“The high turnover for coaches in Brazil is bad for players’ development and bad for the teams’ quality,” wrote Tostao, the 1970 World Cup-winning forward, in his regular column for newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

“The league should regulate hiring and firing, but the clubs don’t want that.”

Messi, Ronaldo set to renew stellar rivalry in Champions League

MADRID — Lionel Messi’s rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo has enthralled football for the better part of a decade, and the pair will duel for potentially the final time when Barcelona host Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The two titans of the modern game, who split ownership of the Ballon d’Or between 2008-2017, were the talismans of Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid until Ronaldo left the Spanish capital for Juventus in 2018.’

After the Portuguese forward arrived from Manchester United in 2009, El Clasico became synonymous with his rivalry with Barcelona captain Messi.

Since Ronaldo’s departure, the fixture has lost some of its glamour, leaving the football world eager for the pair to be pitted against each other again.

Those hopes were frustrated earlier in the group phase, with Ronaldo missing Barcelona’s 2-0 win in Turin after testing positive for Covid-19. Messi scored with a penalty. They are poised to meet again this week.

Both sides have already qualified for the last 16 from Group G but Juventus can overtake Barcelona if they win at Camp Nou by three goals or more, or by any two-goal margin other than 2-0.

Ronaldo and Messi are in the latter phases of their careers, at 35 and 33 respectively, but both retain their elite status.

Messi has six Ballons d’Or to his name and is the current holder, while Ronaldo finished third in the 2019 awards, boasting five.

Ronaldo thriving

He is thriving in Italy, having quickly become key for Juventus, who presented him with a commemorative shirt on Saturday to recognise his 750th career goal, ahead of a 2-1 win over neighbours Torino.

“Ronaldo is the top player for mentality,” his former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri told The Times.

“Ronaldo has a different head to everyone. He’s won five Ballons d’Or, five Champions Leagues and one European Championship for Portugal, and that is so difficult, and it’s always him making the difference. Every year he has a new objective.”

Ronaldo netted 21 goals in his debut season for Allegri to take Juventus to the title, followed by 31 last season under Maurizio Sarri as they lifted the Scudetto for the 36th time.

With eight goals in six appearances this season for Andrea Pirlo, Ronaldo is showing no signs of slowing down. By contrast, Messi is struggling in Spain.

The Barcelona forward tried to escape this summer but his club refused to let him leave and Messi appears an uncomfortable fit in new coach Ronald Koeman’s tactical plans, and far from his decisive best.

Barcelona are enduring their worst start to a league season for 33 years and Messi’s inconsistency is part of the problem, with four goals in 10 appearances and two of those from the penalty spot.

Carles Tusquets, president of the managing board in charge before club elections in January, said he would have sold Messi in the summer, economically speaking.

“Financially, him leaving would been good for the club,” Tusquets told Catalunya Radio. “We’d be better off because we said that his salary is the highest in the world. Nothing could be truer.”

However, the Argentina forward, who failed to find the net in a dismal 2-1 defeat by promoted side Cadiz on Saturday, remains, and the chance to joust with his old foe Ronaldo may rouse him.

While Ronaldo was in Spain he and Messi drove each other to greater and greater heights, in what was football’s greatest rivalry between individuals. On Tuesday, they cross swords once again, perhaps as a last encore.

Holders France handed awkward draw, England faces Poland in 2022 World Cup qualifying

PARIS — Holders France was handed an awkward draw in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup on Monday, with Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina standing in its way on the road to the finals in Qatar, while England will face Robert Lewandowski and Poland in its group.

Gareth Southgate’s England, a semifinalist at the 2018 tournament in Russia, will also take on Hungary and Albania as well as two of the minnows of international football, Andorra and San Marino, in Group I.

France will also face Finland — who recently beat Les Bleus in a friendly in Paris — in Group D, with Kazakhstan completing the group that was drawn in a virtual ceremony at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Didier Deschamps’ side is in a group of just five teams because they will be involved in the finals of the UEFA Nations League in Italy in October next year.

One of the most significant results of Deschamps’ time in charge of France came in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, when his side faced Ukraine in a deciding play-off. They lost 2-0 in the first leg in Kiev before winning 3-0 in the return.

As for England, it is the seventh time they have been drawn with Poland in World Cup qualifying.

Their most recent encounters came in the campaign for the 2014 finals in Brazil, with the sides drawing 1-1 in Warsaw before England triumphed 2-0 at Wembley.

Most famously, England missed out on a place at the 1974 World Cup after losing 2-0 in Poland and then being held 1-1 at Wembley.

Fixture pile-up

The European qualifying competition begins next March, with a total of 13 countries from the continent going through to the 32-team finals.

There will be three rounds of fixtures in March, three more in September and then two each in October and November.

That will only increase the pressure on a fixture calendar that is already packed, especially with the postponed Euro 2020 set to go ahead in June and July, 2021.

That means a team that reaches the final of Euro 2020 can expect to play 17 competitive games between March and November next year.

Only the winners of each of the 10 groups will qualify automatically for the finals, which are to take place in November and December of 2022.

The 10 runners-up will go into play-offs alongside the two best Nations League group winners who miss out on qualifying via the traditional path.

Those play-offs, in March 2022, will produce three more qualifiers in total.

Germany, whose coach Joachim Loew has been under severe pressure after a run of poor recent results for the 2014 World Cup winners, will be expected to come through a group in which Romania and Iceland appear the main threats.

Elsewhere, reigning European champions Portugal’s main opposition will come from Serbia and the Republic of Ireland in Group A. Cristiano Ronaldo will be 37 by the time the finals come around.

Spain notably drew Sweden and Greece in Group B, while Italy must take on Switzerland in Group C.

Belgium, the world’s top-ranked team, will meet Wales in Group E. The sides met in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals with Wales coming out on top.

After qualifying for Euro 2020 to reach their first major tournament since the 1998 World Cup, Scotland was handed just about as kind a draw as possible on the road to 2022 as it was placed in Group F with Denmark and Austria.

World Cup qualifying has already started elsewhere, including in South America which began its marathon 10-team round-robin tournament in October.

There will be four direct qualifiers from Asia to join hosts Qatar, four from South America, while Africa will have five qualifiers.

Three teams will progress from the North, Central America and Caribbean zone, with the remaining two berths awarded to the winners of inter-continental play-offs scheduled for June 2022.

Title challenge is Tottenham’s new normal as Kane, Son see off Arsenal

By - Dec 06,2020 - Last updated at Dec 06,2020

LONDON — Jose Mourinho said Tottenham have “grown up” to become Premier League title contenders after Harry Kane and Son Heung-min combined again to beat Arsenal 2-0 and move back top of the table on Sunday.

A crowd of 2,000 Tottenham fans were in attendance for the first time in nine months to enjoy seeing their side inflict another blow to a rapidly unravelling season for the Gunners.

Spurs are unbeaten in 10 league games and have taken seven points from a difficult run against Manchester City, Chelsea and their north London rivals over the past three games.

“We grew up. I can imagine lots of people can imagine three matches in a row against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, would be a moment for us to drop points and go back to normality,” said Mourinho. “But we didn’t go back to normality. We are there. I believe one more week at the top of the table unless Liverpool win by many.”

Mourinho’s men moved two points clear of Chelsea at the summit, but Liverpool can move level on points at the top with victory over Wolves later at Anfield.

A first league title in 60 years for Tottenham may depend on keeping Kane and Son fit as they have hit a combined 27 goals in all competitions this season.

The South Korean opened the scoring in stunning fashion as he collected Kane’s pass down the left and cut inside to curl into the top corner.

That was the 10th of Son’s 13 goals this season for which Kane provided the assist.

By contrast, Arsenal have scored just 10 goals in 11 league games all season and despite plenty of intricate build-up play, Mikel Arteta’s men again failed to provide any cutting edge in the final third.

“We have to score goals. If not, it’s unsustainable” said Arteta, whose side are languishing in 15th after a fifth defeat in seven games.

‘He makes

me look good’

The difference between the teams was summed up in first-half stoppage time as from what appeared a dangerous Arsenal attack, one long ball set Spurs on a four against two break as Thomas Partey had already pulled up with an injury.

Son took his time before feeding Kane, who smashed in off the underside of the bar from a narrow angle to become the all-time top goalscorer in north London derbies.

“That’s exactly what we set out for,” said Kane. “Sonny and I are feeling good. When he’s picking up passes and sticking it top bins, he makes me look good!

“For us it’s one game at a time, but results like this and the last couple of weeks will only help us.”

Arteta was angry at Partey for not saying on the field and leaving his side exposed.

The Ghanaian came to the side of the pitch waiting to be substituted after suffering a recurrence of a thigh injury as Spurs raced up the field.

“I applaud their first goal, it is world class, but the second goal we are a man down, we leave a massive gap and they take advantage. He has to stay on the pitch. It looks like the same injury he has already had.”

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still to score a Premier League goal from open play since signing a lucrative new contract worth a reported £55 million ($73 million) over three years in September.

The closest the Arsenal captain came to breaking his drought was a header from Kieran Tierney’s excellent cross that Aubameyang headed over.

Hugo Lloris twice saved from Alexandre Lacazette headers low to his right as Arsenal camped in the Spurs half for the second period without any reward.

The visitors enjoyed 68 per cent possession and had more shots on goal, but did not have the class in front of goal shown by Kane and Son to make the difference.

Dortmund drop more points with draw at Frankfurt

By - Dec 05,2020 - Last updated at Dec 05,2020

BERLIN — With their star striker Erling Braut Haaland sidelined by injury, Borussia Dortmund dropped more Bundesliga points on Saturday when they laboured to a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The draw leaves Dortmund third in the table, three points behind leaders Bayern Munich who host second-placed RB Leipzig later on Saturday.

After suffering a shock 2-1 home defeat last weekend against struggling Cologne, Dortmund missed the finishing of top scorer Haaland, who is out until January.

Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki admitted the team struggled to gel, especially with several players back from injury, such as defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, who made his first start since March.

“We have a lot of games, so we had a few players on the pitch who had been injured. We struggled to find our rhythm,” said Burki.

“We weren’t bad after the break and could have won with a bit of luck.”

Dortmund’s defence was caught napping when they conceded an early goal by Frankfurt’s Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada.

The introduction of 16-year-old striker Youssoufa Moukoko after the half-time saw Dortmund raise their tempo.

They equalised with a superb strike from 18-year-old US forward Giovanni Reyna but failed to again breach the Frankfurt defence despite finishing the stronger.

Gladbach draw in Real warm-up

Borussia Moenchengladbach warmed up for Wednesday’s crunch Champions League match at Real Madrid, with a last 16 place at stake, by drawing 2-2 draw at Freiburg, where they have not won since 2002.

“We had the chances to make it 3-2, but unfortunately didn’t take them,” said Gladbach goalscorer Breel Embolo.

“In the end, it was a fair draw.”

Gladbach went ahead when Embolo netted with an excellent first-time shot on 23 minutes.

Freiburg equalised with a header by defender Philipp Lienhart and then took the lead just after the break when Vincenzo Grifo converted a penalty.

Gladbach levelled when Alassane Plea hit the top corner of the net with a wonderful curling shot on 50 minutes.

Freiburg striker Nils Petersen squandered a golden chance in the final five minutes by firing over with the goal at his mercy.

The result leaves Freiburg 14th, a point from the bottom three, while Gladbach are seventh, six points behind Bayern.

Having ended their 18-match winless run by shocking Dortmund 2-1 last weekend, Cologne backed it up with a 2-2 draw at home with Wolfsburg to climb to 15th.

Cologne’s 18-year-old striker Jan Thielmann showed great composure to fire in their opening goal before Maximilian Arnold equalised with a superb free-kick.

Winger Ondrej Duda restored Cologne’s lead when he shot into the corner on 43 minutes.

However, Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst rescued a point away from home with a close-range header just after the break.

Cologne are only out of the relegation places on goal difference while Wolfsburg are fifth.

Arminia Bielefeld earned their first win since September with a 2-1 victory at Mainz, although both clubs remain in the bottom three.

Japan midfielder Ritsu Doan and Manuel Prietl scored Bielefeld’s goals in a deserved win before Mainz replacement Kevin Stoeger netted their late consolation.

Sixth-placed Union expect to be without in-form striker Max Kruse for the foreseeable future after the 32-year-old injured his hamstring in Friday’s 3-1 derby defeat at Hertha Berlin.

PSG’s Neymar puts Man United to the sword

PARIS — Neymar’s brace helped Paris Saint-Germain to a vital 3-1 win over Manchester United on Wednesday that took the French club to within touching distance of the Champions League last 16, while Borussia Dortmund secured their qualification for the next round and Olivier Giroud scored all four goals in Chelsea’s 4-0 thumping of Sevilla.

PSG could have been on the brink of elimination from Group H with a defeat at Old Trafford but Neymar put last season’s runners-up ahead in the sixth minute and the world’s most expensive player sealed their victory in stoppage time.

In between, Marcus Rashford’s shot went in off Danilo Pereira to bring United level in the first half, and Edinson Cavani hit the bar against his former club.

Marquinhos prodded the French champions back in front midway through the second half and the game appeared up for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side when Fred was sent off for a second yellow, having been fortunate to escape a red card early on.

Neymar’s late clincher could prove crucial as it gives PSG the head-to-head advantage following United’s 2-1 win in Paris in October.

“We had some big chances, big moments and that’s the difference when you get to the big games,” said Solskjaer.

There is a three-way tie on nine points at the top of the group with RB Leipzig right in contention after Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth scored in injury time to give them a 4-3 victory at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Irfan Can Kahveci’s superb hat-trick looked to have rescued a draw for Basaksehir as they came back from 3-1 down to draw level. Yussuf Poulsen, Nordi Mukiele and Dani Olmo also scored for Leipzig.

It all means PSG now need only draw at home to Basaksehir next week to qualify.

“We have almost qualified, which means we have not qualified yet. That is the reality. Being almost pregnant does not mean you are pregnant,” said PSG coach Thomas Tuchel.

United also only require a point when they visit Leipzig, but will be out if they lose, while the Germans would in that case go through.

Dortmund secured their progress after a 1-1 draw at home to Lazio in Group F, despite losing Erling Braut Haaland to a leg injury.

Raphael Guerreiro put the Germans in front but Ciro Immobile’s penalty against his old side brought Lazio level.

Lazio will join Dortmund in the next round if they avoid defeat against Club Brugge next week.

The Belgians are two points back and still in contention after beating Zenit Saint-Petersburg 3-0, with teenage Belgian international Charles De Ketelaere putting them ahead, Hans Vanaken adding a penalty and Noa Lang also scoring.

The performance of the evening came from Giroud, as the France striker scored all four goals in Chelsea’s 4-0 win away to Sevilla.

On just his second start this season, Giroud produced two lovely finishes before heading in to make it 3-0 and then winning and converting a late penalty.

The 34-year-old is the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the competition since Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas in 1965 for Real Madrid against Feyenoord.

Both teams were already through but the win allowed Chelsea to secure top spot in Group E.

“Amazing solo performance from Olivier. Delighted with him, delighted with the team,” Chelsea Manager Frank Lampard, the last Chelsea player to score four goals in a game in 2010, told BT Sport.

In the same group, Marcus Berg’s goal gave Krasnodar a 1-0 win over Rennes, meaning the Russians will play in the Europa League in the new year.

Juventus beat Dynamo Kiev 3-0 as Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his 750th career goal, his record-extending 132nd in the Champions League.

Federico Chiesa and Alvaro Morata also scored for Juve, who had already qualified from Group G before the game, along with Barcelona.

The Catalans kept up their perfect record and stayed on course to win the group by beating Ferencvaros 3-0 in Budapest without the rested Lionel Messi. Antoine Griezmann and Martin Braithwaite netted before Ousmane Dembele converted a penalty.

Frappart makes refereeing history

TURIN, Italy — Stephanie Frappart became the first woman to referee a men’s Champions League game on Wednesday as Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 750th career goal in a 3-0 win for Juventus over Dynamo Kiev.

The 36-year-old Frappart has already made history as the first woman to referee in Ligue 1, and took charge of the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea. She also made her Europa League debut in October.

“Another barrier has been broken down, we know that she is very good, which is the most important and fundamental thing,” Juventus Chief Football Officer Fabio Paratici said before the game of Frappart.

The Italian champions were already through to the last 16, along with Group G leaders Barcelona, but can still pip the Spaniards to top spot, sitting three points behind them ahead of their trip to the Camp Nou next Tuesday.

“We’re ready for Barcelona,” said Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo, whose side lost 2-0 to Barca in Turin, a game Ronaldo missed with coronavirus.

“These are games that change the season in terms of self-esteem and we will go there to win.

“But first there’s the [Turin] derby and we need to focus on the league. Even if we are qualified, it’s important not only for the classification, but for our progress.”

“But I’m satisfied with the game and the approach of the guys. I’m young and I know I have to improve like my players, but I go on with my work.”

Chiesa breakthrough

Juventus had few problems on the pitch against the Ukrainians who they had also beaten 2-0 in Kiev on October 20.

Federico Chiesa inspired the victory, scoring the opening goal on 21 minutes before helping Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata add two more in the second half.

Dynamo goalkeeper Georgiy Bushchan kept out a Weston McKennie header on 17 minutes.

But five minutes later, ex-Fiorentina midfielder Chiesa got his head to an Alex Sandro cross to beat Bushchan for his first goal since joining Juventus two months ago.

Ronaldo hit the woodwork after half an hour, with Buschan also denying the Portuguese star early in the second half.

The visitors had few chances but Wojciech Szczesny did well to prevent Viktor Tsygankov from scoring an equaliser before the break.

Just before the hour mark, Italy’s Chiesa powered down the right wing before sending in a low cross for Morata which Bushchan pushed into the path of Ronaldo to tap in from close range.

The 35-year-old extended his Champions League record to 132 goals in the competition, and brought his tally for club and country to 750 goals.

Chiesa was again involved in the third goal with 25 minutes remaining, picking out the run of Morata, who took three touches before firing in his sixth Champions League goal of the season, having also scored a brace in Ukraine.
