Jordanian involved in shooting incident at West Bank crossing laid to rest

AMMAN — Maher Jazi, who was involved in the shooting incident at the King Hussein Bridge crossing, was laid to rest on Tuesday in his home city of Maan.

Jazi was reportedly involved in a shooting incident on September 8 at the King Hussein Bridge crossing with the occupied West Bank.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry said it handed over the body of Jazi to his family for burial in his hometown of Maan, some 220 kilometres south of Amman.

The ministry's spokesperson Sufian Qudah said that efforts were ongoing to ensure the release of Jordanian nationals Mesleh Oudat and Hussein Neimat detained [by Israel]  following the shooting attack, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect involved in the deadly shooting at the King Hussein Bridge, also known as the Allenby Bridge, was Jordanian national Maher Diab Hussein Jazi, the Ministry of Interior has said.

The Foreign Ministry has described the shooting incident as an “individual act”, underlying the Kingdom's rejection of targeting civilians for “whatsoever reasons.”

Israel said a truck driver opened fire at the King Hussein Bridge crossing on September 8, killing three Israeli guards before being "eliminated" by security forces.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the driver "exited the truck and opened fire at Israeli security forces operating at the bridge."

The King Hussein Bridge crossing is the only international gateway for Palestinians from the West Bank that does not require entering Israel, which has occupied the territory since 1967.
