Transport minister highlights transport sector strategy

AMMAN—Minister of Transport Wissam Tahtamouni on Tuesday discussed the current reality and challenges of the transport sector during the weekly Government Communication Forum. 

Sharing details on the ministry’s framework and the 2024-2028 National Strategy of the Transport Sector, noting that “The ministry’s strategy is aligned with the Economic Modernisation Vision and its objectives.” 

She emphasised that the ministry is focused on establishing a comprehensive database for the transport sector and enabling an intelligent transportation system.

The minister also noted that the sector faces a multitude of challenges such as the financial challenges which hinder the maintenance and the upgrading of existing infrastructure, and the funding of large-scale transport projects.

Tahtamouni also highlighted the ministry’s major achievements and projects, noting that the transport sector contributed 6.2 per cent to GDP in 2019, with expectations to reach 7 per cent by 2028. She also noted that employment in the industry stood at 95,000 in 2019, with a target of 112,500 employees by 2028.

The minister also highlighted the ministry’s major projects, including the sustainable mass rapid transit projects and the air cargo hub development project, among other projects.
