CPI rises by 1.67% in first half of 2024 — DoS

AMMAN — The Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of inflation, went up to 110.36 points in the first half of 2024 compared with 108.55 in the same period of 2023, an increase of 1.67 per cent, the Department of Statistics (DoS) announced on Thursday.
In its monthly bulletin, the DoS noted that the personal property sub-group was responsible for 8.38 per cent of the index increase, with water and sanitation contributing 7.34 per cent, unions by 5.86 per cent, rents by 4.03 per cent, meat and poultry by 3.74 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
In June, the inflation rose to 110.74 points, compared with 108.83 points for the same month in 2023, recording an increase of 1.75 per cent.
The department also noted that the personal belongings sub-group was responsible for 10.28 per cent of the June 2024 increase, water and sanitation by 7.34 per cent, unions by 5.86 per cent, fruits and nuts by 5.64 per cent, and vegetables, dry legumes, and canned goods by 5.49 per cent.
Decreases in oils and fats by 2.37 per cent, clothing by 1.59 per cent, household textiles by 1.25 per cent and furniture, and carpets by 1.19 per cent helped to offset the overall increase.
The fruits and nuts sub-group contributed to reducing the rise by 7.4 per cent, vegetables, legumes and canned food by 2.9 per cent, oil by 1.77 per cent and home textile by 1.57 per cent, the department added.
On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 0.15 per cent in June 2024, reaching 110.74 points, compared with 110.58 points in May. The main components contributing to the monthly increase were rents at 1.71 per cent, fruits and nuts at 1.67 per cent, culture and recreation at 1.34 per cent, garments at 1.03 per cent and spices, and other food at 0.48 per cent.
