Man charged with manslaughter of brother

AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Saturday charged a 26-year-old man with manslaughter in connection with the alleged murder of his younger brother in Karak on Thursday, official sources said.

The 21-year-old victim was reportedly stabbed by his older siblings following a heated argument on Thursday night, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Aref Abu Aleem questioned the suspect over the weekend and questioned members of the family over the stabbing incident, a senior judicial source said.

“The suspect reportedly confessed to police that the stabbing incident was over constant family problems,” the senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.

The two brothers engaged in a heated argument while in the street and bystanders intervened, according to the senior judicial source.

However, the argument escalated and ended up with the suspect “stabbing the victim with a knife once in the chest,” according to the senior judicial source.

The suspect claimed during interrogation that he had no intention of “murdering his brother and that he meant only to scare him”, according to the senior judicial source.

The suspect reportedly ushered authorities to where he dumped “the knife he said was used in the stabbing incident”, the senior judicial source added.

The victim was rushed to Karak Government Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, the senior judicial source said.  

A postmortem conducted by a team of government pathologists indicated that the victim died of a single stab wound to the chest, a senior medical source said.

Abu Aleem ordered that the suspect be detained for 15 days at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigations into the incident, the senior judicial source added.

The Criminal Court prosecutor is expected to summon several witnesses who were present when the defendant reportedly stabbed his brother, according to the senior judicial source.
