Double standards unveiled
Oct 22,2023 - Last updated at Oct 22,2023
The Baptist Hospital massacre in Gaza is an egregious war crime that demands unequivocal attention. Hospitals are sanctuaries of healing, where lives are saved and wounds are mended. Deliberately bombing these institutions not only leads to the loss of innocent lives but also incapacitates the affected community's ability to access critical medical care. This is a calculated move to exacerbate suffering and increase mortality rates, all in the pursuit of weakening the targeted group's will to resist and exist in the face of occupation.
The deliberate targeting of hospitals and residential civilian areas stains our collective conscience, serving as a stark reminder of the depths of human cruelty and the urgent need for a unified global response. By recognising these acts for what they are, crimes of genocide and ethnic erasure, we take a step towards justice, towards ensuring that such atrocities never occur again, and towards preserving the sanctity of human life and dignity, even in the darkest of times. Bombing hospitals and residential areas, specifically targeting civilians, is a calculated strategy employed to instill terror, demoralise communities and ultimately erase their presence.
Residential areas are the heart of any community, where families live, children play and people seek refuge from the turmoil of the outside world. When these areas are subjected to relentless bombing campaigns, the very essence of community life is shattered. Families are torn apart, homes are reduced to rubble and the psychological trauma inflicted on survivors leaves scars that last generations.
The attacks leave an indelible mark on survivors, inflicting a level of trauma that is immeasurable. Beyond the sorrow of losing loved ones, they must confront the profound agony of witnessing their homes and communities reduced to rubble. These experiences scar not only the present but echo through generations, leaving behind a legacy of enduring pain and suffering that stretches well beyond the immediate conflict.
Furthermore, many Jordanians view the ongoing silence of many international communities in the face of the occupying force's (Israel's) relentless attacks on Gaza as complicity in the genocide and erasure unfolding before us. This inaction amplifies the gravity of the situation, highlighting the urgent need for global intervention to halt these atrocities and prevent further loss of life and cultural obliteration.
Additionally, there is a prevailing sentiment of disillusionment towards international governments and human rights organisations. Many Jordanians perceive them as bearing the weight of double standards and hypocrisy. This sentiment is deeply rooted in the stark contrast between their calls for rights and the brutal reality witnessed on the ground. Jordanians grapple with the heart-wrenching sight of children being senselessly harmed, while these same organisations advocate for children's rights within Jordan's borders. The glaring disparity in attention and action towards the children of Palestine and Gaza only serves to compound this feeling of disillusionment. Likewise, as these organisations champion women's rights, people witness tragic instances where Palestinian and Gazan women suffer, lose their families, and lose their lives.
The empowerment of youth, another focal point for these organisations, appears to ring hollow as rockets rain down, shattering the very promise of a brighter future for the young. This stark incongruence between rhetoric and reality fuels a growing skepticism and calls for a more consistent, accountable approach to safeguarding human rights worldwide.
Many in Arab nations find a poignant irony in the deafening silence of international governments and organisations, champions of democracy, diversity and inclusion, as they witness a chilling genocide unfold. Their fervent appeals for these noble ideals seem hollow in the face of such unfathomable brutality. It is imperative for the international community to address this stark incongruity and stand united in denouncing these atrocities.
We must turn words into action, safeguarding our principles from complicity in grave injustice. Through united resolve and steadfast commitment, we can work towards ending this heartrending chapter in history.
All occupation is a violation and it has to end.
