Funding shortfall: WFP cuts monthly aid to refugees in Jordan

AMMAN — The World Food Programme (WFP) is reducing the value of its monthly assistance by one-third for 75 per cent of the 465,000 refugees it supports in Jordan. 

The most recent WFP Jordan Country Brief shows that the programme has so far received $109 million of its 2023 funding requirements which equal $230 million. 

“Between June and November 2023, WFP requires $115.8 million to cover the food requirement of 465,000 refugees in camps and communities with unconditional resource transfers, maintaining the current transfer values,” the report stated. 

It also showed that the programme has assisted 975,000 people and administered $13.9 in cash-based transfers in May 2023. 

“In May, WFP provided monthly food assistance to around 456,000 vulnerable refugees in camps and host communities through cash-based transfers,” it said. 

Ninety-six per cent of assisted refugees are from Syria and 3 per cent are from Iraq, while the rest are from Yemen, Sudan, Somalia and other countries, the report added.
