AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a November Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to 12 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder his friend in Irbid in November 2021.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of attempted murder, stemming from “a heated dispute” with the victim, on November 3. The defendant was given the maximum sentence.

Court papers said the defendant and another man were standing in front of the victim’s house arguing.

The victim asked the two to stop arguing and leave the area, the court documents said.

Shortly afterward, the court maintained, the victim was walking to the market when the defendant approached him in a vehicle.

“The defendant pulled out a pistol and fired several rounds at the victim,” the court stated.

The victim was struck with three bullets and was rushed to a nearby hospital, the court documents added.

The defendant contested his ruling via his lawyer, who argued that there were “legal errors in the investigation procedures”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the 12-year sentence ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.
