PSUT ranked first at university level in Women in Data Science competition ‘WiDS Datathon’

AMMAN — In the World Women in Data Science competition “WiDS Datathon 2023”, organised by Stanford University, two teams from King Hussein School of Computing Sciences at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) secured the first and second positions among universities globally. 

The competition drew 1,800 participants from universities and companies representing 100 countries, said a PSUT statement. 

Moreover, PSUT's teams were placed at the fifth and seventh positions in the overall ranking among all participating universities and companies.

The winning teams were represented by the students: Dana Al Sharif, Mohammad Doleh, Layan Hammad, Issa Al Bawwab, Darren Jasser, Qusai Abdo, Manar Abu Tair and Omar Atawneh, under the supervision of Bushra Hijjawi.

Wejdan Abu Elhaija, the president of PSUT, expressed her pride in the outstanding performance and competence of PSUT's students.

Abu Elhaija also emphasised the importance of supporting students and their supervisors in their efforts to raise the university's name in global competitions that promote innovation in various fields, which corresponds to the university's academic plans and the world's developments. 

This vision is also consistent with the directives of HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, chair of the university's board of trustees, to prepare an outstanding and innovative generation as global partners in the technological revolution and advancements witnessed by the world, to become Jordan's ambassadors to the world.

Prof. Ashraf Ahmed, the Dean of King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, stated that the participants in this year's competition employed data science to enhance long-term weather forecasts to help people in preparing for and adapting to extreme weather phenomena caused by climate change.
