AMMAN — Inmate Bassem Awadallah on Friday informed the concerned authorities at the Reform and Rehabilitation Centres Directorate that he ended a hunger strike that started last Monday, spokesperson of the Public Security Directorate (PSD) said on Saturday.

The spokesperson said that the inmate was transferred to the hospital on Friday, where doctors diagnosed him with a middle-ear infection and gave him medicine before discharging him, according to a PSD statement.

The PSD official stressed that Awadallah is receiving the necessary medical check-ups in accordance with the law, and enjoys his full rights, including visits, contacts, medical follow-ups and consular visits.

The spokesperson denied the allegations made by the inmate's lawyer in the US, stressing that they were baseless, noting that members of the International Committee of the Red Cross have also visited the inmate and checked on the conditions of his detention, which fully conform to Jordanian law and relevant international standards.
