AMMAN — The King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC) has launched the "Your Zakat is My Life" campaign to encourage individuals to donate their zakat to support cancer patients who cannot afford treatment at the centre.
According to Islamic law, or Sharia, zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, a tax that requires paying 2.5 per cent of what a Muslim owns in cash money, gold, silver, cattle, farms and rentable assets, in alms. Currently, 81 patients are on the waiting list for charitable funds, waiting for support to begin their treatment, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The charitable funds were established at the KHCC to collect donations to support financially disadvantaged children and adults with cancer, regardless of their age, gender, or nationality. In addition, the KHCC has received an official fatwa from the Jordanian Fatwa Council (No. 2006/2, dated 22/3/2006), which permits it to receive zakat funds to provide medical treatment for financially disadvantaged cancer patients. Supporters can donate their zakat through various methods, including online donation (www.khcc.jo/zakat) or by calling 0798777222.
