Dutch ambassador tours development projects in Irbid

AMMAN — Jordan has provided Syrian refugees with “what major countries could not”, Dutch Ambassador Harry Verweij said on Thursday, citing the Kingdom's “heavy burdens” in this regard, noting that Jordan requires support to adapt to the challenges of asylum.

During a visit to Irbid to view projects implemented through the municipal services and Social Adaptation Project in the greater Irbid and Al Wasatiah municipalities, Verweij said that the Dutch government looks forward to providing further support to Jordan in many areas, particularly development-related projects, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The ambassador expressed his admiration with the schemes implemented through the Social Adaptation Project and the considerable efforts on the part of beneficiary municipalities.

The Social Adaptation Project, to which the Dutch government contributed under the umbrella of the donor group and the World Bank, will focus on projects related to development and investment in future phases, with the aim of helping municipalities provide high-quality services to the public.

Tawfiq Khawatrah, project manager of the Social Adaptation Project, said that the project had provided support to several municipalities in Irbid between 2014 and 2022, with a value of some $35 million.
