AMMAN —  The Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Thursday signed an agreement pertaining to the third phase of the FARA project, which aims to reduce water loss in Amman, Zarqa and Salt.

The third phase of the project is to be implemented over four years with a value of approximately $26 million, $20 million of which is funded by USAID and the remaining $6 million by the Jordan Water Company, Miyahuna.

Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al Najjar signed the agreement in the presence of USAID Water and Environment Office Director Franck Lile, acting General Manager of the Water Authority Rami Abu Rawaq, Miyahuna General Manager Mohammed Oran, and a number of USAID representatives, according to a statement from the Water Ministry.

In addition to reducing water loss, the memo aims to improve water distribution in Miyahuna’s service area, as well as enhance technical staff's project management capabilities.

The project aligns with the national strategy to reduce water loss by 1-2 per cent annually, targeting 25 per cent reduction by 2040, Najjar said.

The minister expressed his gratitude for the 70-year partnership with USAID, and the agency's continuous support.  The effective partnership will support the country's efforts to ensure a sustainable supply of water for its citizens and will help maintain Jordan’s economic stability, the minister said.
