AMMAN — As part of its efforts to intensify transition towards an electric public transport sector, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has taken an initiative to develop a comprehensive national strategy for electric mobility.

On Monday, the ministry’s Assistant Secretary General Hasan Heiari told The Jordan Times that the initiative comes as part of the government;s efforts to design and implement a strategic plan for electric transport in Jordan.

“Until now the ministry has appointed a consultancy firm which will be preparing the required study for the strategy,” according to Heiari.

He noted that the study is aimed at enhancing dialogue about issues related to expanding the work of electric transport, and building upon previous efforts and achievements.

The study would also evaluate the issues at hand, Heiari said, adding that at the current stage, viable options would be presented, in order to support the formulation of the national strategy.

“It has been agreed to form a technical team which consists of all relevant institutions such as the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Environment, the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC), and the Land Transport Regulatory Commission (LTRC),” he noted.

The official said that the ministry’s initiative was during a workshop this November.

“It is expected that through this strategy, a clear action plan would be designed and after which clear figures and projected costs could be announced,” he said.

Heiari stated that this strategy is being worked on in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, due to its role in mitigating carbon emissions.

The Jordan Times on Monday contacted the Ministry of Transport for comment, but there was no response.
